POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad Guyanese Lennox Cush produced another brilliant all-round performance as PowerGen defeated W-Connection Wanderers by 41 runs in the final of the inaugural West Indies Players Association (WIPA) Twenty20 Caribbean Club Championships on Sunday night.
Batting first, PowerGen scored 133 all out in 19.4 overs and W-Connection Wanderers replied with 92 for nine off 20 overs.
Cush, also Man-Of-The-Match in PowerGen's upset semi-final win over Merryboys on Saturday, was at the forefront of their winning effort again and left thousands of fans dancing to the beat of the tassa at the picturesque southern venue.
About 8 000 fans packed the venue and many more were locked out, as at 8:30 p.m., officials of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service told WIPA officials to close the gate for security reasons.
Cush entertained those fortunate to get inside as he top-scored with 29 in his team's moderate score.
He then returned with the ball to grab two wickets for eight runs, as his team claimed the title and TT$1 million (about BDS$320 000) as winners. Wanderers got TT$300 000 (about BDS$95 992) for placing second.
Set a target off 134 runs for victory at 5.7 runs per over, Wanderers struggled against PowerGen's spin attack.
Cush, Sherwin Ganga and Samuel Badree were three prominent spin bowlers at the Stanford 20/20 Tournament and they showed their worth again against Wanderers.
Former West Indies Under-19 spinner Rishi Bachan also came to the party and grabbed four wickets for 17 runs.
Wanderers made a terrible start to their innings with batting dynamo William Perkins falling to Badree for only three.
His opening partner Kieran Powell (eight) also fell cheaply to Esuan Crandon, and at 15 for two, PowerGen were back in the game.
Barbadian Kenroy Williams looked settled coming in at No.3 but wickets kept tumbling around him and the innings never picked up momentum. He made 22. (CMC)
