THE BRIDGE forming a part of the River Road Redevelopment Project in Bridgetown is now clear for crossing.
Although it is not officially open, the temporary bridge has been torn down so the new structure is now the only way across the Constitution River.
During a recent tour of the project, acting chief executive officer of the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., Charles Holder, said the bridge formed part of Phase 1.
"Phase 1 extends from the Charles Duncan O'Neil Bridge to an area just below the River Bus Stand. Phase 2 of the project will take us from that area just above the existing pedestrian bridge to the Constitution Bridge, which is at the east gate of Queen's Park, and then Phase 3 will take us from the Constitution Bridge to the James Tudor Roundabout," he said.
Holder added that a couple of adjustments with regard to pedestrian movements still had to be made in the area in order to allow the contractor to expedite the completion of works.
As such, he said they would be installing the appropriate signage to direct the flow of pedestrian traffic, as well as temporary lighting.
Lead consultant for the project, Brian Begg of Design Collaborative, added: "We have issued a partial completion on part of the works to allow us to take possession of the pedestrian bridge, which is now complete, pending completion of some handrails.
"We want to open that to the public in order for the contractor to be able to remove his temporary pedestrian bridge. It is envisaged the works would be fully completed during the period late September/October," he said. (CA)
