THE HAITI BARBADOS LOVES YOU CONCERT held last Saturday at Farley Hill National Park, has turned out to be more than just a fund-raiser for the earthquake-stricken country.
For what started out as a collaborative effort between Government and entertainers, has provided major international exposure for the country.
One of the coordinators, Aja, said that after the event was conceptualised, the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) held discussions with the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), which in turn agreed to broadcast it across the region.
But that exposure was enhanced when international stations CNN and the BBC decided to pull clips throughout the day to highlight the Haiti fund-raiser, which featured Barbados' top entertainers.
What organisers did not expect was the magnitude of coverage and exposure the country gained after Britain's Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, took to the stage and danced up a frenzy as they enjoyed themselves to Red Plastic Bag's Something Happening.
The two Princes were in the island to promote the Sentebale Charity, which is seeking to raise funds for disadvantaged and orphaned children in Lesotho.
The Prince's embarrassing fall from his pony while playing in the Sentebale Polo Cup charity match at Apes Hill Polo Club on Sunday also received wide coverage from the foreign media, with pictures splashed across British newspapers yesterday.
Chief executive officer of Sentebale, the charity founded jointly by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, told an international Press briefing at Hilton Barbados last week: "bringing Sentebale here is going to create a huge awareness of the island and increase the tourism profile on the island".
"We didn't expect Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso to come on stage, and that has become worldwide news. Even up to this morning we got calls that a clip of the concert featuring Prince Harry, Red Plastic Bag and Mac Fingall was broadcast on CBS.
"So the concert is continuing to give tremendous exposure that we would not have been able to pay for. The entertainers did it to raise funds for Haiti, but it has turned out to be an international event and we, as Barbadians, have to be very proud of that," said Aja.
Government's co-ordinator of the Haiti relief project, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner told the DAILY NATION last night that she was very pleased with the international exposure given the concert.
However, she said, the amount pledged and collected at Farley Hill and at the box offices had not yet been tallied up.
She said pledges were still coming in and was awaiting word from an auditor and co-producer of the show Cranston Browne, for the final tally.
"As soon as I get that information, I will inform the media," Sandiford-Garner said last night.
Browne said earlier that he was still in the process of tallying up the funds collected at the event and could not yet say how much money had been raised.
Those wanting to pledge, could still call 1 800 74 HAITI or 1 800 744 2484

Sure I can. I'm not an unreasonable person. ;-) The small problem I have with these message boards is sometimes you only a single chance to make you're whole point since it could be unsearchable again.

Re: Get the protocol right lest you embarrass Barbados as a backward country on the international stage : 2/5/2010
The Monarchy is evolving. It has needed to evolve in order to remain relevant in the places where it is recognised still as Head of State. Prince Harry is not only third in line for Britain (if the status quo is maintained in Barbados), he's third in line for the Barbadian Throne as well. I know this may be splitting hairs but it is important to point out that since Barbados is a Constitutional Monarchy (i.e. it is a separate "Queendom"/Kingdom of the United Kingdom.) It just happens that the post of Head of State for Barbados happens to be the same person as in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, etc. etc. The Institution of the Monarchy is shared equally between each of the sixteen independent Realms. As a matter of practice, no realm is supposed to be more important than another. If the institution of the Monarchy wishes to remain relevant in it's Barbados Realm it has to from time to time reinvigorate ties or else Parliament could up and decide one day to break ties. As a Constitutional Monarchy it means the real power of Barbados actually rests in Parliament, and not the Sovereign. The Constitution of Barbados binds the Monarchy since they gave it prior Royal Assent. If you read through it it does outline and governs the role of the Monarchy in Barbados. The reason I say Barbados is a separate Throne is because technically if the British woke up tomorrow and became a republic whomever they choose as Head of State would have no bearing on Barbados since a President is not a line of succession. As mentioned prior one Realm cannot make a decision that just alters the government of another Realm. If this were to happen in Britain, Barbados would still have the Monarch as HoS until it changed that role itself. The way I see it, Prince Harry 'sold the Monarchy' based on what might appeal to a wide cross section of Barbadians. If you govern from in foreign all of the time it isn't likely the people will continue the relationship. He found a way to show himself very quickly and very publicly in Barbados as being a Barbadian.(He'd also become a Barbadian as Head of State since he'd be recognised under the Constitution.)

How could anyone see that bad quality video. You have to be kidding me. That video footage was the worst.
ISLAND ON SHOW : 2/3/2010
PESSIMIST PRIME, you have got to be the most negative, angry, jealous person of the month. On Monday morning on the Today show on NBC in New York, it was a pleasure to see Barbados portrayed in such a positive way.to see the princes' in Barbados promoting in charity causes for two of the world's most impoverished nations. You should be appreciative of this positive aspect, as opposed to many of the world's countries whose headlines are filled with doom & gloom(unstable governments, corruption, unspeakable violence, hunger and more).why can't you be thankful and stop being so negative? It's usually people like you who have nothing to contribute to your society, but instead try to tear it down. After seeing Barbados portrayed on NBC,(CBS & CNN had shorter versions), but non the less great exposure around the world. Could you imagine the tourism revenue that Barbados is going to reap from this? The prince appeared so care free, happy & safe. This is what travellers look for when they are planning a vacation. You should THANK the prince for his mishap.Great images of him holding the little girl.Lighten up and SMILE. NEW YORK,USA

OPTIMIST PRIME, you need to go in time out. Your punishment...Don't go & play with that computer key for 6 months. I believe that we all have the right to express our feeling but my friend, you need to go & hide for a while. You spoke like an idiot. Y ou make me sick. The Prince,BAG & the others you made me proud. The Bare thought that the word BARBADOS was mentioned in GOOD taste/favour, make me proud with goose bumps. Go hide ya tail. You are hereby sentence to time out for 6 mons. You are an angry man. Hala back.

To all the critics. Lighten up! You only have ONE life! Enjoy it and stop finding fault with every little thing! Either that or just mind yuh business.
COME ON OPTIMIST PRIME : 2/3/2010
I can not really believe that the Nation publish so much crap by OPTIMIST PRIME in one ARTICLE. What a waste. OPTIMIST like i said before, you can support the BLP as much as you like, but please stop making a fool of yourself. PRINCE HARRY had a great time in Barbados, maybe it one of the best places he has been in all his travels. You talking nonsense about his behavior. I remember his uncle PRINCE ANDREW having beers with ordinary Barbadians many years ago. These guys are humans being like us,they are just lucky to have been born into a lot of wealth.
OPTIMIST you really let me down this time around. I hope the Government will let the people of Barbados know if they footed part of the bill for the PRINCE visit. They have nothing to hide.

ALL THE BS ABOUT HOW GREAT BARBADOS LOOKS TO THE INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE IS JUST THAT-BS. THE BOTTOME LINE IS HOW MUCH IN THE WAY OF $$

David Rudder and the Barbadian artistes performing Rally Round the West Indies & Haiti made for a remarkable night.
Why does it take more than 48 hours to learn the amount of contributions made?
: 2/2/2010
iF THE bLP were still in power, I am sure that you Optimist Prime would not have questioned the costs of the Royal visit for us. When will you wake up my friend and realise it's about us, Barbados, Barbadians and a little exposure? By the way Optimist Prime, what constitutes 'Her Majesty's standards'?

Agree with you 100% about the Nation, YOGI. Blogging is a joke. I won't be bothering my old tail to contribute too much now either. They can't take constructive criticism and they are too afraid of their skin and the slick legal eagles to print the gospel truth. Hopefully I'll still be around when they mature.

The wrong care : 2/2/2010
Madame YOGI, the government promised Freedom of Information and accountability. I am simply trying to find out if Barbados paid and how much is cost. Is it publicity Barbados wants when it uses taxpayers money then what was the Prime Minister's visit to Haiti all about - a photo op? Second point, on pg 32 of the Friday Nation I note that barbados is the only country that has not donated money from its Treasury to haiti. Again is ask: how much did it cost to finance that trip/stay and why could that money not have been donated to the victims of Haiti who are starving? There was a choise: spend on poverty in Haiti or luxury, here but the DLP chose publicity and theatrics, while people in Haiti are starving.
Get the protocol right lest you embarrass Barbados as a backward country on the international stage : 2/2/2010
Listen BAJAN, I will not joing you and degrate His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Harry and his Royal Highness' Visit to Barbados to support a charity of His Highness' choice. HRH is not an Errend Boy for this country. HRH is the third in line the the British Throne. By the way - please tell Irene Sandiford-Garner that HRH is not the Prince of England or the Prince of London.
What is your point : 2/2/2010
Hello j. payne, What point are you making? Doesn't Barbados recognise the Queen as the Queen of Barbados. Isn't Prince Harry the third in line to the Throne? Then - what is your point?
Yes, but how much did it cost : 2/2/2010
wjm, did they not hear about Robin Fenty or Ryan Brathwaite or even Patrick Husbands? It certainly wasn't free so how much did it cost - one million, one million five hundred thousand, two million - how much.
Duh!!! : 2/2/2010
If the organisers of the Haiti benefit or Government are surprised at the media coverage because a member of the UK royal family is here, they have no business being involved with anything where publicity is required.
It's very simple. Celebrities attract attention. The bigger the celeb, the bigger the media coverage

Island on Show : 2/2/2010
I watched the concert on-line on Saturday and thought what a great show. Hearing all the old tunes by the Merry Men and the other entertainers brought back some wonderful memories. The icing on the cake was the performance by Prince Harry. I can't stop watching the video on Youtube of his performance, it was even on the CityTV News here in Toronto last night showing Prince Harry and MacFingal dancing.
Great job done by all who made this show possible to help the people in Haiti.
: 2/2/2010
I am sitting up here in Toronto and I am as pleased as punch to see my little island nation on CNN, BBC and even Perez hilton. This is advertising that is free and seen by more people in a positive way than all the dollars the tourist board spend on advertising.
Good show
We are proud of you Barbados.

Optimist Prime..............Hmmmmmmm time for a name change. The Prime Minister is right. Barbados is a nation of complainers.

Barbados- Great teaching moment!!! : 2/2/2010
OK, yes the visit might have been clostly, and yes the Princes may have been promoting their agenda; however, that's what Princes do!!
I'm glad that Barbados agreed to host them because it could have been any of our neigbors. As I sat in my kitchen wathing Amy Roboach, on the Today Show/NBC, with the beach, sand, and boats as her background, it seemed to be the Hilton from where she was
reporting, I was proud to tears. This story gave me an awareness of the magnatude of the
Haiti relief programs in Barbados;The
Princes charity partnerships; reminder of the kind person Princess Diana was;a glipse of how Beautiful Barbados is, and some of the amennaties we had to offer, including polo;and an appreciation for a good party.
This was a tremendous teaching moment for millions world wide,it really trumped thinking about the 6 inches of snow that fell that day here in the mid atlantic region of the US. This is also the time folks world wide make their vacation plans- so it was right on time. Believe it or not, most of the world is still "star struck" by British royalty, so let us use this to our advantage. Life is too short for us to be so cerebral all the time!!!

OPIMIST PRIME SHAME ON YOU. : 2/2/2010
OPTIMIST PRIME I thought that you had more sense. How can yo be so blind by your partisan politics. Not even MIA would have made the stupid comments you made, because she
understand the benifits that has accrued to Barbados to Barbados from PRINCE HARRY visit, and him being see on stage with RED PLASTIC BAG. Even if the Government of Barbados had footed the cost of the PRINCE visit to Barbados is not a problem, because the we could not have afford to pay or the International publicityw we got out of it.
What I found interesting is , I got up and read the Nation online yesterday morning, and they did not mention one word about the PRINCE taking a fall from his horse at the POLO MATCH, but I Can sit here in my living room and see it on ABC news and CNN. Then when I say there arenojournalist in Barbados people does want to kill me. Ah gone. Oh to the Nation onine EDITOR, You all can discontinue this online BLOGGING,because you all do not really undertand what online blogging is all about. This section has become way too BIAS and you all only print those persons who are attacking the Government. Perons who are objective and who have the interest of Barbados at heart sit down and write blogs and there are not printed. That is why I do not waste my time too often blogging here, not when I can do it in INTERNATIONAL FORUMS where their are printed.
Maximum Exposure : 2/2/2010
Prime optimist, hold tight you playa hater. It doesn't matter what it cost to bring him there the fact of the matter is that Barbados has received tremendous exposure that even the cost of the trip cannot pay for. You snotty stuck up bastard.
Baje to the core
Would it have cost Barbados Money? : 2/2/2010
Barbados got a lot of milage out of it... It shows that Barbados is a fun place that even princes and princesses can come and some fun and 'let their hair down.' Keep in mind, if he had a good time here them he's likely remember Barbados in years to come. Certainly not a bad person to have on your team.
: 2/2/2010
Optimist Prime - Put a sock in it. Irrespective of the reason/cause there are still many people here in Maryland, USA that I encounter on a daily basis who do not know where Barbados is located. We are indeed greatful for the exposure.
Yes but how much did the Royal visit cost : 2/2/2010
The expose came because the paparazzi was following the Primce as they do with all celebs. The break from protocol where the third in line to the British Throne was seen on stage in an undigified manner by Her Majesty's standards - is bound to make news. It is not about Barbados but the Prince and the Charity he was promoting. It so happen that he was in Barbados. Now that is the easy part but did it come without an extremely high price? Now! That is the real question journalists should be asking. How much did that "Royal Trip," cost Barbadian taxpayers or did it?
