I AM WRITING this letter to protest the outrageous and hostile article published in the DAILY NATION on March 17 titled 'Cuba's Big Black Lie'.
It surprises me that THE NATION, which has traditionally respected and reflected on the real truth of Cuba, has now been an accomplice of an individual who has come to Barbados to spread propaganda against our country.
The purpose of Carlos Moore is to use Barbados for his anti-revolutionary propaganda and that is why we do not understand why this paper published this very shameful article against the Cuban people and the revolutionary process.
I hope that in the future THE NATION will take into consideration the good relations that exist between Barbados and Cuba, and not play the game with individuals like this person who denied his own country and then shamed us when they say that they are Cubans.
It is no less outrageous and astonishing that the Errol Barrow Centre For Creative Imagination of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, has supported Moore in the propaganda of defamation and lies against Cuba.
The publication of my letter of protest by THE NATION is much appreciated and I hope the newspaper will not publish, in the future, any more unpleasant articles like the one I am complaining about which does not correspond or identify with the traditional and magnificent relations and collaborations which exists between the Government and people of Barbados and the government and people of Cuba.
- PEDRO GARCIA ROQUE,
Ambassador

Mere propaganda, lies against Cuba : 3/23/2009
As far as I know Barbados is a democracy and in a democracy you are entitled to express your opinions and ideas freely, without hindrance, and especially without fear of punishment. It is quite obvious, from the tone and import of his letter to The Nation, that Mr. Pedro Roque is unfamiliar with the most basic tenets of democracy. But of course, he would not be because he is from Cuba, a nation which for the last 50 years has endured a one party political system and regularly, as a matter of state policy, jails anyone who dares to dissent. In fact his letter sounds more like a threat than an opinion and the fact that Barbados and Cuba have good relations does not mean that they have to agree on everything. It is so typical of the old Communist system to chastize anyone who thinks differently! I do hope The Nation Newspaper will not allow Mr. Roque, who is the Ambassador of Cuba, to intimidate it and that it will continue to publish everyone’s opinions and not give in to threats from people representing countries that do not know or understand the democratic system of governance. I’m so thankful when I hear Barbadians broadcasting their opposing views because when I hear them it means there is freedom of speech and liberty of expression in this blessed democracy! As Voltaire said: “Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too. “
Cuba : 3/23/2009
The Ambassador must realise that there is freedom of the press in Barbados. The article in question reflected the views of an individual. I am sure that there are many Blacks in Cuba who might not agree with the views espoused by Carlos Moore, and there are others wh might. But Mr Amassador..he has a right to express his opinions.
Mere propaganda, lies against Cuba. : 3/23/2009
Mr. Ambassador Garcia Roque, your attempt to deny the reality in Cuba, vis-a-vis Mr.Moore's correct assessment re Blacks, only confirms your 'dictorial' spirit, which you cannot impose on us here in Barbados. Here are a few of the historic facts concerning Castro's tyranny on its citizens, since January 1, 1959. Castro has distinguished Cuba as one of the most monstrous human-rights abusers in the world. 500 thousand human beings have passed through Cuba's gulag. On a per capita basis, this gives Castro's despotism the highest political incarceration in the world. Firing squads have carried out more than fifteen thousand executions. In pre-Castro Cuba, blacks enjoyed upward social mobility, and served in many government positions. In Castro's Cuba, the jail population is 80 percent black, while the government hierarcy is 100 percent white. These are just a few of the facts on Castro's Cuba.
MORE PROPAGANDA, LIES AGAINST CUBA : 3/23/2009
Mr.Garcia did not refute one single point which Dr. Moore offered. Therefore, who is the reader who has never visited Cuba or know little or nothing about it to believe, Mr. Ambassador or Dr. Moore? Mr. Ambassador should remember too that in Barbados, the media has much more freedom to publish than in his native Cuba where propaganda is rife and the so-called press is simply a state organ to spread same. There's no such thing such as invesigative journalism. Engaging in that in Cuba could land one in jail or "pushing up daisies."
