Dane's chance to make her mark

Published on: 11/25/2009.

HISTORY ISN'T ON HER SIDE and neither will most of Barbados.

But maybe Caroline Wozniacki can expect to see a change in both by weekend.

The fast-rising tennis teen will be looking to reverse her recent fortunes against world No.1 Serena Williams when the two square off in this Saturday's momentous LIME Tennis Pon De Rock exhibition at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Since making her pro debut four years ago, the budding 19-year-old Dane has been on the fast track to stardom, culminating with her first Grand Slam final appearance at this year's US Open and a career high world ranking of four.

However, her early success on the WTA Tour hasn't translated into victory against the domineering Williams.

Not yet at least.

Wozniacki might take comfort in the fact that she held three match points against Serena in a quarter-final matchup back in January, before pulling out of their most recent encounter at last month's Tour Championships.

And the two each have three titles this year.

Only that Serena's two Grand Slams (Australian Open, Wimbeldon) and Tour Championships crown rank significantly higher than victories in Ponte Vedra Beach, Eastbourne and New Haven.

But make no mistake, this won't be a David versus Goliath-like affair if the two top five players do decide to go for their shots instead of merely looking to entertain the crowd, who is certain to be star-struck just by the appearance of Serena alone.

Williams still has the reputation of a top ranked superstar to protect against an upstart teen, while Wozniacki will want to prove that she can overturn her 0-2 record and beat the world No.1 ahead of a possible semi-final showdown in the Australian Open less than two months away.

The indoor surface - being flown in from Madison Square Garden - also presents the head-to-head matchup with a bit of novelty as both previous encounters were contested on hard courts.

And whatever fatigue and injury concerns that previously plagued Wozniacki are supposedly behind the fourth-ranked Dane, so this historic clash should be entertaining if not competitive.
