Teen gets one more chance

Published on: 11/5/2009.

ONE LAST chance.

That, said Magistrate Christopher Birch, was what he was giving troubled teenager Gabrielle Shanika Roberts.

Roberts, 16, of Park Road, Bush Hall, St Michael, was back in the Bridgetown Traffic Court last Friday after Magistrate Birch had remanded her to HMP Dodds for breaching her probation.

That was not her first time on remand.

She was initially remanded after she appeared in court charged with assaulting her mother, Victorene Wilkinson, on May 17.

She was again remanded, a month later, when she breached the conditions of her bail.

"This is your fifth appearance over the past six months," Magistrate Birch said.

"You've beaten your mother; you've breached the terms of your bail; you've breached your probation; you got yourself in a nice little tangle that resulted in someone else being charged and your school has relieved itself of you," Magistrate Birch further told her.

"And all of this before your 17th birthday."

In addition, said the magistrate, Roberts had not even lasted six months on her probation.

"But I will take one last chance on you even though you really would have exhausted all possibilities," the magistrate said.

He imposed a six-month sentence but suspended it for two years.

This, the magistrate told Roberts, was her chance to grow up and become an adult.

Last month, the court heard that Roberts failed to report to the Probation Department as ordered, after she had been placed on probation.

The court also heard that Roberts left home on October 21, never showed up for work, and was not seen again until October 23.

Barbados will continue you have this type of discipline until they make it mandatory that every citizen must either do one or two years in arm forces our gave volunteer service to some institution. I bet if we dig deeper we will find that the trouble with this kid reflects the troubles of the parents.

The magistrate is wasting precious time. Don't the Defense Force recruit women, if so, her mother should sign her up. Some 'boot camp experience' would drive that hostile behavior out of her. I have seen it work for lots of teens like her.

Is Mr. Birch for real. He gave a 16 year old Young Adult another chance and tell her to go and be an Adult. What kind of madness is this. I might be wrong but, I thought you officially become an adult in BIM at the age of 18. At her age she is still considered a minor and should be sent to a group home for her own safety and that of the public at large. Someone else might not be as forgiving as her mother, and do her some serious bodily harm if she continue on her present path. How much chances do you give someone like this. As the old saying goes "lord have mercy". bajanjoy,N.Y.

Teen with too many Chances : 11/5/2009
How many chances does this person need to prove that she is a hard core criminal? I guess she has to kill someone. Confine this person and threat her she needs counseling. Fed-up with the watered down justice system.

so giving her a chance to grow up and become an adult on the street will only allow her to continue in her present state. have they considered that this girl is (1) mentally ill (2) or on drugs? send her to the mental heath facility for evaluation, if she is found to be competent, then send her straight to Dodd's.

This young woman is in need of some serious counselling. Giving her all these chances has not lead to a behavioural change. That tells me that she needs psychological therapy which she is not getting.

Low life.

Neither you Mr Birch, Probation or Prison can give her a mind. She has to do that on her own. IT's now up to her and this last chance will tell. Retired

What a joke, talk about send her the message that she can do whatever, to whoever, whenever and basically just have a little rap with the judge. Soon enough, you will be paying for her long term stay at Dodds, mark my words.

Is this judge really serious: How can you give this repeat offender another chance. Are you going to wait until she seriously injure someone before serious action is taken. She is now of age to be place in confinement for a period of time to allow her to think of her behavior. Stop being so lenient with this young woman.

I hope we are not overlooking something here. It is evident in this article that this is a youth with serious behavioral problems which needs to be addressed, It would be interesting to know what interventions occured so far other than those mentioned in the article and what was recomended by the Probation Dept such as Court ordered conflict resolution and anger management Programs as well as phychiatric evaluation to help this youth who seemed to be in crisis. I hope that all concerned parties are on board with this case before this youth and many more like her become a danger to her/them selves.

I read this story with sadness. It is very sad to read the turmoil this family is going through. This is a very troubled young woman who needs a psychiatric evaluation. Incarcerating her is not going to be the solution. I am not in the mental health field but the signs are as clear as the nose on my face. This young lady is crying out for help. She cannot grow up to be a productive citizen nor adult if she does not get the proper help. She maybe bi-polar and needs medication to help her inbalance along with counselling. Give her the real help she needs. Jersey Girl 7239V

The Magistrate has shown kindness and some understanding of the difficulties of growing up. I do hope for more opportunities for proper counceling where lives can be turned around. It has happened before. This also is room for our many churches to become involved in tolerance and support for our young people and mothers and "fathers".
