'DEAD' MAN WALKS

AT A LOSS: 46-year-old Reynzill Scantlebury. (Picture by Donnay Deane)

Published on: 10/31/2009.

by MELISSA ROLLOCK

THE NEW CEO of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital will be launching an investigation into claims by a St Michael man that he woke up in their morgue after having an epileptic seizure.

Communications specialist at the hospital, Katrinah Best, said yesterday she had informed Dr Dexter James about the matter surrounding 46-year-old Reynzill Scantlebury, also known as Lorenzo.

The car washer from Whitehall, St Michael, in a recent interview told the SATURDAY SUN that he "came to" in the hospital's morgue sometime this month after blacking out near Halls Road, St Michael.

"When I wake up I was inside what I thought was a dark room; it was black and cold . . . . When I got up and look behind me, I saw this big refrigerator with drawers. I had just come out of one of the same drawers . . . ," Scantlebury related.

He said he was not aware of the time lines as a result of his blackouts and could not give a definitive time as to when he was hospitalised, nor for how long.

The matter was even brought up by a concerned caller on Starcom Network's Down To Brass Tacks radio call-in programme yesterday.

Best said the hospital's Medical Records Department did not have a record of a Reynzill Scantlebury, but of another man, also a Scantlebury, whose first name was close to his and who had Lorenzo as a middle name.

"The man we have on record was age 49 and he died on one of the 'C' wards on October 4. On that same day, he was taken to the morgue and taken out of hospital by the funeral home on October 9.

"We don't have any record of a Reynzill Lorenzo Scantlebury aged 46 on record," said Best, who added that she had spoken to the director of Support Services at the QEH, Louise Bobb, whose jurisdiction the morgue fell under.

When the SATURDAY SUN contacted the funeral home in question, one of its directors confirmed that they did remove a body on October 9 and conducted funeral services for the deceased.

"At this moment in time, given the delicate nature of the inquiry, we're going to conduct some investigations," said Best, hinting that it could end up as a police matter.

More details in tomorrow's SUNDAY SUN and online at NATIONnews.com.

It is possible that Mr.Scantlebury could have been in a disoriented and confused state post the seizure.Epileptic seizures can cause strange behaviours. He probably woke up in a place but cannot recall how he got there or why he was there and also walked away not knowing where he was.He might be very ashamed of his being an epileptic, passing out, being incontinent of bladder and possibly bowel during a seizure.I write under correction but I do not think that most Bajans have reached the level where we have respect for some disabilities. One would hear, "he does got fits and fall down and wet hisself". I have yet to believe that he would be in the hospital , whether in the A&E or in a ward and be thrown to the morgue as mouldy bread is thrown to the garbage. One is pronounced dead not assumed dead.Given time we will get the facts; it should not be difficult to find them.

ABOVE ALL THIS,SERIOUSLY QEH NEEDS TO BE INSPECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT .IF ANYONE IN GOVERNMENT FAMILY DIE UNDER ANY MALPRACTICE OR PRONONCED DEAD AND WAS NOT, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELL. SO,WE ALL ARE THE SAME HUMAN BEING,THE SAME CITIZENS OF BARBADOS. THE TREATMENT THAT YOU WILL GIVE TO THE USA TOURIST GIVE US .WHEN I COME TO BARBADOS I ASK GOD NOT TO MAKE ME GET SICK THERE CAUSE I WILL HAVE TO CALL THE AIRLINE FOR A EARLY PASSAGE .LIKE I WROTE BEFORE STAFF AT QEH DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE CONFIDENTALITY OF IT PATIENT FOR EXAMPLE A PATIENT VISIT TO THE HOSPITAL IS NOBODY RATHER THAN THEY PROXY'S BUSINESS, MISTREAT OF A PATIENT BECAUSE HE OR SHE IS IN PAIN AND CALLED TO MANY TIME CAN BECOME ANNOYING TO STAFF . I AM IN THE HEATLH CARE SYSTEM MYSELF AND A LOT OF THINGS IN BARBADOS NEED TO CHANGE THIS A DIFFERANT CENTURY. BARBADOS HAVE DEVELOPE A LOT AND HAS A LOT OF USA WAYS LATELY NATION STAFF PLEASE GOOGLE THIS ABBREVIATION HIPPA AND INTRODUCE THIS TO MANAGEMENT STAFF AT QEH.

KNOW BEFORE YOU TALK! : 11/6/2009
Again i'm reading the morning paper and i'm seeing a lot of folks saying all king of things. One person is saying when you are place in the morgue you are completely naked. That is'nt true.As I say again this is bringing back bad memories for me.When my mom died yrs 15 yrs ago she was place in the hospital morgue because she died at the QEH. I can remember up to this day what she was wearing because what I saw was'nt pleasant. She was wearing a blue and white nighty with a small bow up by her neck.If Owen Sealy from the Belmont funeral home was still alive he would confirm what I am saying. I broke down to see the state my mom was in.Owen had to console me right there and then.My heart still break to this day.And now for this to happen makes me wonder if she was really dead when they place her in the morgue because as I said she had something like tears coming from her eyes. She was a diabetic.WHAT IF SHE WAS IN A COMA and they thought she had died.My mind is just going wild right now.But i'm trusting God and hoping that she was dead when she was place in that morgue. And I also hope this case with scantlebury is'nt really true.Because that would mean that only God knows how many people were place in that morgue alive before. This thing have me so worried that i'm scared out of my whitts to even sleep.I think the Government need to take back full control of this Hospital and see to it that things like this does'nt happen. Those doctors need to go back to the old time way.Placing a mirror in front of the nose before sending folks to the morgue. "When I wake up I was inside what I thought was a dark room; it was black and cold . . . . When I got up and look behind me, I saw this big refrigerator with drawers. I had just come out of one of the same drawers . . . ," Scantlebury related. Anybody with common sense should know that this statement does not make any sense. First of all, Where exactly did he awake? In the Refridgerator or on a table in the morgue? By looking at the size of the refridgerator and the angle he would have to come out, someone would have had to take him out. Secondly, isn't there light in the morgue all the time, especially if an orderly has to take someone there? Lastly, If he's saying he was in the "refridgerator" all that time, was he breathing and if so, where was the oxygen coming from. His body would have seized up, his brain would have shut down due to the lack of oxygen, and he would died due to starvation.

Dead man walking! : 11/5/2009
I read in another Barbados paper this morning where a demonstation was shown that a person when place in the morgue feet goes in first and I found that to be untrue. When my mom died 15 yrs ago in the QEH,she was in the morgue for a few days because I was living over seas. When I went with the Funeral director to claim the body her head was in first, not her feet.So something sounds fishy here. And I would never forget what I saw that day when they pull the draw out for me to identify her.My heart still breaks up until this dat.Her eyes and mouth were open and there were tears running from her eyes. There were'nt anything covering her eyes and nothing to prevent her mouth from being open. I was walking all through Bridgetown with tears streaming down my face.To see how my Mom was treated in death it broke my heart in pieces. Here in USA a lady fell on the floor at Kigs County Hospital and died. The one at the head were fired. There was a big shake up at that hospital. The same thing needs to be done back there,Bajans take things too damm easy and sweep stuff under the rug.Well this is time to make an example out of them that this kind of thing does not happen again.I love my little Island Barbados and I am 'APPALLED' when other folks read about these kids of things in the paper or on the net, and think the worst of Bim.Shake up the ones at the heads. They have became too lazy on the jobs, it all about the money and they don't care about people anymore.Where have all the good nurses and doctors gone?Someone at the head please help a sister out. Anyone reading these posts would think that the QEH IS HELL ON EARTH here in Barbados . Before we all continue to jump on the ignorant bandwagon we should GET THE FACTS . God alone knows whom they will come from .We are all too quick to cry down government institutions . The QEH is opened every day of the year without fail .No man or woman or institution ,private or state run is perfect .Dr in front of your name does not mean you are God . All i read is about shutting down the hospital .When that is done what will happen to the countless amounts of people that use the facility ? Upgrade , hire more staff of course. Then all the talk about suing .Again if there is enough evidence to prove it is true persons should be held accountable and what is deemed necessary and fair be done . It is us the tax payers who will foot the bill not the doctor ,not the orderley .To the poster who wondered what would have happened if he went to the crematorium .That shows your lack of education on the procedure . Use the net not to criticize but for self education .One body alone does not go in the kiln at a time . Therefore these persons would have been on ice prior .Even if there was a funeral service before the body goes back to the home until such time .SENSATIONAL STORIES MAKE FOR GOOD NEWSPAPER SALES FUELLED BY SOME BUSY BODIES . Sales will soar .

Poor Journalism : 11/4/2009
This story reads like something from the Enquirer and I am ashamed that this is coming from The Nation Newspaper. How on earth can this man 'come to' in the morgue, and just walk out? Impossible! First thing, a body is totally naked when being put in the morgue. Second, the cold in the freezer would probably cause him to die of hypothermia. Third, Bajans are notorious gossips and news like this would have been all over Barbados before it hit the newspaper. Fourth, the man cannot reproduce the tag that is put on the big toe of a body when they are in the morgue. Melissa Rollock needs to check her sources properly before rushing to print and aovid such sensational stories. Nation seems to be turning into nothing but a local rag, comparable to the Enquirer or Star and is slowly but losing its star quality. The only thing that is saving it is the fact the other local paper is so poorly laid out that at first glance it looks boring and bland.

Cover Up Or Porterage : 11/3/2009
Some important facts are missing and I believe that people should not always be too hasty to jump to conclusions. Yes I agree that conditions at the QEH are not always 100%, but if you have an enqiring mind you will ask yourself questions before believing every story/account. It would be wise to wait for the truth. Knowing Bajans and our culture, the attendants would have leaked some message to the press before this story came out. We would have had the vivid account of a terrified worker as the "dead sat up". If this is a cover up we have to remember that the more persons involved, the less likely it is that the story will remain a cover up.

Back from dead : 11/2/2009
While living in New York, I had surgery and was recovering in my room asleep, when I was awoken by a very strong shake, when I opened my eyes the nurse let out such a sigh of relief. I asked her what happened and she told me that she could not get a pulse, she was very scared because it was just a minor surgery. For some reason, when I am ill my pulse and heart rate slows down considerably, she thought that I was dead. I apologized for scaring her so badly, she was visably shaken, but that is something I have no control over. Perhaps if I was monitored it would have flat lined. So I always must remember that if I'm ever hospitalized to make a note of that for my file. Maybe the doctors should go back to the old method of holding a mirror in front of your fact to catch the breath that is too low to detect sometimes even with a listening device.

To Bajan living in NY, who would have arranged for the funeral? It seems that this man has no relatives.

This is not the first time that something like this happened.A few years ago a lady from St Joseph, now deceased, screamed for blue murder when she woke up and discovered that she was on a gurney being fast tracked to the morgue. One wonders how many were not strong enough to scream, or kick down the body drawer.

Two Sons`funeral home is the agency that`s responsible for collecting dead persons so what`s the alarm. Its said that there`s no hurry for Forensic Pathologist, that`s the person that should beinvestigated. These things do happen and you can file a law suit, but in Barbados I`m not sure and then he is a car washer. The lady that was dead on the hospital floor in Brooklyn,it was said that a few people jobs were in trouble that was connected to the incedent and that included doctors. Her daughter came and a law suit was pending.

Dead Man Walking : 10/31/2009
Berry-Queens, NY, I agree with you. We are always quick to cry foul on our institutions. Yes this incident was unfortunate and should be thoroughly investigated. I am a non Barbadian and a couple years ago my daughter was hospitalized at the QEH, and I was really impressed with the quality service she received. I presently reside in New York, and two months ago, my daughter was scheduled for oral surgery. As she was about to receive the anaesthia, I reminded the doctor of an additional procedure that was to be done, and guess what, he had no clue what I was talking about, even though the note was in the file he was holding in his hand. The surgery had to be cancelled. An isolated case you might say, but I always wondered what would have happened had I not opened my mouth.

That place should be closed? : 10/31/2009
Cudos to the educated individual who contributed this valuable comment: "the place should be closed". You are right! Lets just shut down the QEH! Every doctor, every nurse, orderly, lab tech, general worker etc... just go outside on Martindale's Road and sit on the sidewalk in the shade, fold your arms under your armpits and sip margaritas and iced tea all day. How about tomorrow, cuz i really do need a vacation and Barbadians obviously need a good story to read in the papers. A cocamamie story falls into the hands of some sensationalist journalist and all of Barbados goes STUPID? Just like that? Then again, no surprise...a hospital teeming with employees, visitors, & patients would NEVER have noticed a naked, hypothermic dude wandering the corridors or attempting to leave the hospital. Imagine how many Sir Grantley's QEH will pay out to cover up a story like this! LOL. naiive.

Lost for a while : 10/31/2009
This happen to a friend of mine in Brooklyn He told me he was wheeled down to cold room. Had the tag on his big toe,but there was a delay before he went into the freezer. He got up and he saw a nurse,he said nurse what am I doing here.He said the nurse took off so fast he was trying to catch up with her but she was just runing and shouting Lord have mercy. Man he said the security guards had to grab her.He said he was lost because he did not know he had died.So this dose not only happen in Barbados

TO YOGI: : 10/31/2009
So what happens if it is a hoax? Based on your comments regarding what penalties both QEH and its doctors should endure then if this guy is "pulling a fast one" should he then be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?

If D-Duppies : 10/31/2009
If the dead bodies are wrapped from head to toe like in NYC, and then taken to the morgue, and placed in a drawer, how on earth poor "Lorenzo" sat up, and how come that he did not "su-fo-cate?" How come that the cold room he was in still allowed him to have all that movement, does cold "tema-tues" slow you down or not? He should be happy that he is alive, and stop crying down our hard working professionals at the QEH. Nine-lives!

WALKING DEAD : 10/31/2009
If he just "came to" in the hospital's morgue how did he know that he had just came out of the one of the morgue's drawers? Is there any independent confirmation that this Mr. Scantlebury was ever admitted into QEH after experiencing one of his "blackouts"? Did an ambulance take him to the hospital? Were the police called when he "blacked out"? When did this Mr. Scantlebury first report this alleged incident to the relevant authorities? Quite honestly, even if one were to give this Mr. Scantlebury the benefit of the doubt concerning his "story" the fact remains that there are so many questions to be answered about this alleged incident.

Lorenzo : 10/31/2009
This is a sad situation and they are many cover ups in the hospital. Imagine a situation where a man went into the hospital for diabetic treatment and woke up with his legs off and where a love one went to surgery for a procedure and the surgeons pinched the intestines and the faeces leaked into his system. Family members visited the hospital and told the nurses that he was swelling everyday and smelling also and the nurses basically ignored them. The next week after the surgery, he died. Barbadians don't know the half of what goes on at the QEH and may never know a 1/4.

Dead Man walking : 10/31/2009
Like another writer has said, this is something which has happened from time to to for many years. There are some questions which has to be answered. 1) How did he get to the hospital,if he came by an ambulance, there have to be a record of it. 2)Who was the doctor and nurse in attendance, who pronounce him dead. 3) There should be a sign in book in the morgue,to say that the body was delivered. 4) When he woke, how did he get out of the morgue. 5) And the most important question is Who did he notify right a way? He needs to thank god that he is still alive, god allowed him to come to for a reason. To all of you who seem to think that this is a unique situation to Barbados,I would say to you think again.Men have know to be pronounce dead on the battle field, when the body is being moved to the morgue, tears or a movement is detected, and when the person is examined it is discovered that they are still alive. Mistake are made daily here in the United states. The area to be operated on now has to be marked,so that the wrong area sight,or limb is not remover.People not making such a big deal about it.It is a good think that he was not being autopsied, imagine he saying "ouch" when his chest was open, I am sure the ME and his assistance would have fainted, or die from shock.

This incident unfortunately happens to some people wheeby they go into a coma like state and are prononced dead this has happened in Scotland/England and Australia even cases like these have been reported in Brazil so befoe this lorenzo start o sue or what ever she should get himself off to the doctor and have a thorough physical so that doctors can find out why this rare occurance happen to him because next time he may no come back from the dead. Also it is silly for the hospital to cover this up because cases like these do happen although it maybe a rare occurrance.

He doesn't remember the date or time line?he didn't speak to anyone when he walked out of the morgue? Does anyone remember taking him to hospital???? What,s going on at this hospital? A man is diagnosed with two holes in his heart and then they disappear. Is this divine intervention, or was he misdiagnosed, like Mr Reynzill Scantlebury? And why is the Hospital so quiet about all this we need to hear they explanation on both matters.

WAITING FOR ANSWERS.

Dead Man Walks : 10/31/2009
Reading the comments would make it seem as though the QEH is the most horrible place in the world. Please lay off the hospital and stop being hypocritical cry babies. Don't get me wrong, QEH does need some major work in most phases, but hospitals ALL OVER THE WORLD, have the craziest mishaps. And you bajans living in NY SHOULD KNOW BETTER. Some time last year, there was a J'can lady left in a waiting room at Kings County laying on the floor for hours before anyone went to her aid. By then it was too late. How could that happen? The arrogance, overwork, and laziness that permeates the healthcare industry allow it to happen. As I said before, this happens ALL OVER THE WORLD ON A WEEKLY BASIS. I am currently employed by one of the leading hospitals in NY. I can tell you about "Horror Stories" that have happened in hospitals all over the world. (I would need a few days).Stories that will make that look pale in comnparison.I am not condoning what happened in any form, shape or fashion. Those mistakes SHOULD NOT HAPPEN, and in most cases can prove to be fatal. What I am getting at is whenever these misfortunes raise their ugly heads, everyone seems to go for the jugular, as though(especially in this case)the QEH and those that run it are totally inept.Listen to me, the most up to date and technologically sound hospitals experience the same issues EVER SO OFTEN. It is a regrettable and unfortunate part of hospital care of which the QEH falls in to.
