THE BARBADOS PRISON SERVICE plans to adopt a Singapore model of rehabilitation for inmates.
That was one of a number of best practices that Superintendent of Prisons Lieutenant Colonel John Nurse said they planned to look into after the closing of the 11th annual general meeting and conference of the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) at Hilton Barbados.
"In discussing our community outreach programme, the yellow ribbon project is something very similar which incapsulates a number of points we would like to address in our own community outreach project so we are looking at it very seriously and see what aspects of it we can incorporate and copy and put into a Barbadian context and we will be using those.
In Singapore, the government initiated an annual Yellow Ribbon campaign to promote giving ex-convicts a second chance in society. Typically, a person shows his support for ex-convicts by pinning a yellow ribbon on his shirt during the annual campaign held in September.
"The whole notion is getting the community more involved in the reception of prisoners into the community. There was a component where the family had a more direct input in the work of the prisoner and therefore when it came to the period just before release, they were able then to transition that prisoner into their home and back into the community.
He noted that the Barbados Prison Service would like to see family ties remain strong so that when inmates are released from prison, there was some person or some solid mechanism for them to go back to which would help them to get stronger and remain on the path of positive citizenship.

This will never work in Barbados. Barbados is too hateful. Once a person has had a run in with the criminal justice system that person and their family is marked for life by society. No member of that person's family will be allowed to enter the police force and they'd be lucky to find a job in the civil service. Bajans are a mean lot, unless they've changed overnight and I haven't heard. Surprise me!

CRAP ! NONSENSE ! SINGAPORE MODEL MY FOOT !How about the Bridgetown Model? During Slavery 200 white people controlled 40000 blacks, study how they did it. If you have laws and do not enforce them , you can bring a model from hell-it aint gwine work. The model we need to adopt is to level the playing field and remove the influences of the various FRATERNITIES that intefere with the dispensation of justice-that is where our fundamental problems reside.I am well qualified to speak on the subject. Thank You !

Paragraph 1: We plan to adopt the Singapore model. Paragraph 2: That's one of a number of best practices that we plan to look into. So which is it? Has the decision been made or not? Either somebody can't read or somebody can't write.
It is a good model.... If you go back and study Errol Barrow. : 10/31/2009
Errol Barrow went to school in London with three other people who became political leaders in their home countries... Forbes Burnham (of Guyana), Michael Manley (of Jamaica), Pierre Trudeau (of Canada), and Lee Kwan Yew (of Singapore). These four students all became leaders in their home country and if you look Barrow used to have policies in Barbados that were very similar to Singapore (which is also a former British colony). So by returning to the "Singapore Model" which is seen as working in actuality we are returning to our roots because Errol Barrow had the same vision as the leader of Singapore. Somehow we lost our way though. I applaud this idea of us getting back on track. For the sake of clarity we can call it the "Singapore model" but in actuality it is a part of our on Father of Independence's vision as well. Singapore had one of the lowest crime rates in the world so I'm optimistic about this. Obviously they are doing something right over there. If Mr. Barrow were still alive I'm sure he would be happy to hear Barbados giving a vote of confidence to his original blueprint for a modern Barbados.
Singapore Style : 10/31/2009
there's also caning in Singapore, are we bringing back the cat o nine tails too ?second chances are to be commended, but if we plan to implement Singapore style after prison release, lets also plan Singapore style but whipping

Carefully scrutiny of the Singapore model is necessary to determine whether we can adapt it. Our way tends to be slap dash work and not carefully thought out. For comparison, the size or geography of Singapore, the disclipline of their people from Head of State right down to babes, and the accountability of ALL employees is what is lacking in Barbados. They mean business and are businesslike. We can stop mucking about and be the same. Retired.
Yellow ribbons, Red carpet! : 10/31/2009
For the past week all I`m reading is the nice things that`s should be in place for the ex felons when they`re release from prison such as parole, slates clean, a nice job, have them in your homes and cummunity. That sounds all well and good but what kind of person and crime are you speaking of, because a person is release from prison that this red carpet treatment going to change them. The person will have to earn it.When they are in prison you may be able to pick out a few of the immates that you maybe able to recommend to certain business who may take a chance with.I know that sometimes people make mistakes and should be given a chance but not because they did the time for the crime. As you said that they keep returning to the prison so that tells me they like it there.
Singapore model way to go : 10/31/2009
It good to see that this is given real consideration without adopting a different stance to what is currently available, there will be no change. This would be a step in the right direction in allowing ex-cons back into the community, they can have a better chance of not re-offending.
