Rihanna speaks out

The cover of the December issue of Glamour, featuring Rihanna. (internet image)

Published on: 11/4/2009.

NINE MONTHS AFTER her assault at the hands of former boyfriend Chris Brown, Barbadian pop star Rihanna has finally broken her silence on the incident.

In a preview of an interview coming in the December edition of Glamour magazine, Rihanna, who has been named one of Glamour's 12 Women Of The Year, spoke extensively about the furore immediately following the February assault, which happened in the wee hours of the morning of the Grammy Awards.

"I felt like I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day. It was like, 'What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can't go back home?'," she told the magazine.

She also spoke about the difficulty of going through that experience in the public eye, particularly after the graphic photo of her battered face was leaked to the media, saying:

"It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of.

"I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it's my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women."

The singer, whose new album Rated R is set for release on November 23, said her family and friends had been "extremely supportive" and that "everyone has been there for me".

However she also indicated that despite the support, she sometimes still feels isolated.

"But at some point you are there alone. It's a lonely place to be - no one can understand. That's when you get close to God."

She said the incident and the fallout had made her "stronger, wiser and more aware" and spoke about the veil of secrecy that often surrounds domestic violence.

"Domestic violence is a big secret. No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can't tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up.

"You don't dare let your neighbour know that you fight. It's one of the things we [women] will hide, because it's embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery.

"The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn't heard. Now I can help speak for those women."

Rihanna's interview in Glamour comes ahead of an interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America on ABC tomorrow at 8 a.m. (Barbados time) and on Friday on 20/20 at 11 p.m. (Barbados time).

Rihanna, along with United States First Lady Michelle Obama, is one of two women featured on Glamour's December issue covers. (AL-F) * amandalynch@nationnews.com

Small town Bajans, can't you see how Our Rhi Rhi is being loved and appreciated for herself and her talent? You are making yourselves look jealous and ignorant by trying to pull her down. But like it or not,she got what it takes and By God, we are proud of her and continue to claim her as our own. God give her a woman's strength! She Will survive! (Been there done that).

THEY ARE STAYING WITH THE ABUSER BECAUSE OF THE CHILDREN, YOU SEE YOU SEE IF THE WOMAN WILL GET JOBS AND BE INDEPENDENT THEY CAN SPEAK OUT LIKE RIHANNA,IT IS NOT ONLY HAPPENING TO YOUNG GIRLS OLDER WOMEN TOO,SO I HOPE THAT ALL YOU OUT THERE WHO IS GETTING ABUSE LET IT STOP AND LISTEN TO RIRI AND STOP BEING SO FOOLISH WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE

Rhianna : 11/9/2009
Rhianna, you are a beautiful, strong Bajan girl. And I am very proud of you. I am a 57 year old victim of domestic abuse. I took me a long time to leave my husband and to speak about what he did. When I told, no one believed or supported me. I am disappointed that women are not more supportative of each other. This is why domestic abuse is so prevalent. Stop the "hating" and support this young girl. I admire her courage. Good luck to you. God Bless.

Rihanna : 11/9/2009
I was once told that a Bajan is never honour in his own country. Boy that person sure knew what they were talking about. Why are you Bajans so hateful? Have any of you every watch America's next top model and see the outrageous clothes and things that these models have to do. People, how Rihanne dresses on stage is all part of the entertainment industry, take it for what it is ENTERTAINMENT. When you people go to the movies, do you believe everything that you see on the screen? STOP HATING AND PRAY FOR HER. Rihanna, as a fellow Barbadian I am very proud of what you have accomplished in this short space of time. The only thing that you need to do for you, is always remember to put God first in each and everything that you do and you would always be blessed. And remember where you came from. Invest your money wisely for the music industry is very flicked. Keep smiling, and at some point please make time to further your education. MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU.

I finally got the chance to watch the taped interview with Rihanna and Diane Sawyer and all I can say is that is brought tears to my eyes because I saw myself 32 years ago. To all the ignorant women out there with the silly theories about domestic abuse, let me say this -- I have never met a woman yet who on her first or second date was told by the guy, "I am going to beat the daylights out of you when we are together for a year" -- I am sure that woman if she has any sense would run for her life - when you are young and have had some dyfunction in your family life -- you have a really hard time understanding what love is or isn't -- sometimes you have to learn as Rihanna did --I'm really sorry for her experience but I wish I had walked away sooner but thank God he delivered me from that evil of domestic abuse and in the process I have learned to love myself and in doing so, understood what true love really is -- I am very sure Rihanna will do the same. If we as women continue to tear down each other where domestic abuse is concern it will always show it's ugly head. We all come from different places in life, there are many things that happen to us as women we didn't ask for. Let us learn to speak positively to each other as women. How many men to you hear down grading each other as we do.

Positive woman

Rhianna : 11/9/2009
Jordache88 Can't you see that misery likes company? Many Bajan women are beaten senseless by their mates, raped by their fathers and step fathers, and critized by their churches. Soooo, now that Rhianna has spoken out about Chris Brown they think that everyone knows about them. I give them compassion and sympathy for their ignorance, for they are ignorant. Way too ignorant. I think that the lot of them need to go public with their abuse and abusers and they would not be so uptight and scared. They are waiting to exhale. and about the signs of saten, where do people get this information? Always Satan this and satan that, they are afraid to die, yet they want to go to heaven, thay will tell you about Job abd then blame Satan. Many of them think that the men loves them that is why they whop them and starve them and turn them into prositutes. I remember the program "Head On" was featurning women abused by their kin and my husband wanted to know why they are telling everybody their business. I think that it is normal for Bajan women to be brow beaten and sexually abused and keep silent. Fools, all of them fools. And then always talking about God and Jesus they think that Jesus if he was a woman would stand for a man to hit? I think not. They think that God wants fools in heaven? Not at all.

rhianna : 11/9/2009
Bajan, you should be your child's role model, not depend on a stranger to be that. I hope that you are married to this child's father and not bringing in men or living with a man who will molest this child and then sweep it under the rug. Rhianna, like any super star or young woman, a fashion Icon. You want her to dress in knee high tube socks and sneakers and wear a turtle neck in 90 degree weather? A free concert? you think she running a charity? Go stand on the welfare line if you are not already doing that. Sheesh!!

Rhianna : 11/9/2009
A lot of these women are beaten down by their men either physically or mentally. A lot of them are hiding behind a bible and the church door or tent flap. They think that the more blows they endure by their partner, the bigger their house will be in heaven. Still more have 3 and 4 children by the time they are Rhianna's age. They are jealous, and don't forget that misery loves company. My advise to Rhianna is to get out of the company of misery and stay out. Speak your mind and refuse to stay in a miserable relationship like lots of Bajan women. You are beautiful both inside and out. If a lot of them met Jesus they would reject him unknowingly.

My 2 cents

Dear Sad Bajan, where is Rhianna heading that the preachers and pastora and priests are not. You holier than thour people makes me want to puke. You and the others like you who commit your sins in the dark really need to get lives.

Rihanna : 11/9/2009
Oh come on ! People have their say and it boils down to Bajans hating Rhianna . Give me a break . We live in Barbados so we must all say how much we love her and her music and back her 100% RIGHT OR WRONG ! Get a life ! Everyone will never like you or vice versa. Some of you who surf the net check the same Glamour magazine and the others that have foras and see the nasty and i mean nasty comments she gets about her hair back to the fake nails she totes . Even before that Chris Brown saga began she was getting cuss out . Poor Barbados and the Caribbean get blister as stupid, small mud holes and alot of degrading names . Often you see comments saying to her to go back to the small village she came from . You all must remember that she offered herself for public life and like Whitney, Halley , and all the other singers models and other public figures her life is just that PUBLIC. Yes she made it big and that too has a price. So stop blaming Barbadians .

Are you guys aware that Rihanna will be receiving an award for "WOMAN OF THE YEAR" on Monday 11/9/09 which will be on MTV at 3:30 P.M Eastern Standard Time in the USA...... I wish people would stop making hateful comments about Rihanna and pay attention to the good that she is doing - No wonder some of you are no further than the gutter and want to bring her down to your level - It ain't happening - she is rising to the top with my 100% support. I am extremely proud of Rihanna - if any of you that are negative can top her - let me know then I would support you as well. Ignorance is a curse and lack of common sense is worse

With all respect, give J a break.He/she didn't say anything that was hateful.J'S comments weren't toxic and hateful like some I've read. The ones spewing outright hatred are the ones who would say "Oh!Gary Sobers wasn't a great cricketer." "Luther Vandross couldn't sing.""I know of someone in St Phillip who could play ball better than Michael Jordon." These folks just live to hate.Always have a negative comment to make.

What is all the fuss about Rihanna, leave the lady alone. We all bajans need to get on with our personal lives. It'just pure jealousy Come on give Rihanna a break. Set aside all the drama,it's no body business. Lets look on the good side she is popular in America and all over the world and in the tabloids.I never recall a bajan so popular as Rihanna. May God bless her.Bajans get with it wake up this is not the stone age this 2009.Instead of Rihanna this Rihanna that be proud of her stop all the nasty gossiping and whinning, count our blessings.Focus on other things like going to the gym, taking educational classes reading about health and science and last but not lease how about trying to get in the entertainment business just like RIHANNA.

Stop It Please! : 11/7/2009
There was a young Lady on the front page of the Advocate News a few days ago, with one of her breast partially hanging out ,talk about that .That was suppose to have been during a buisness meeting. Leave this young lady alone, she is an entertainer and a dam good looking one at that, her parents should be proud that they produce such a marvellous looking creature. I wish she was my daughter. Some of them are doing other bad things for nothing . Barbados did not send out this young lady to work she was discovered if not she would most likely be working for a Boss who would be hitting on her anyway ,and would never live long enough to make what she is making now. Lord I wish I was this talented and had the look of this young lady, Stop HATING!

Too big! : 11/5/2009
Thanks ProudAssBajan in Florida. It appears that the Rihanna concept is too big for Bajans to fathom. No wonder some stars turn their backs and never look back. This kind of rejection must be heart-breaking. Too many Bajans appear not to be able to disagree without vilifying. We may be considered a friendly people but we also seem to lack compassion and empathy. Why? Is it some type of deep seated self loathing we hold as a society? Perhaps some brave sociologist may want to enlighten us.

I agree with you Bajan in Va..........there is a separation between what Rihanna wears on stage and every day attire. Of course she is going to dress sexy at times, after all she is young and has a nice body. I guess these old fashioned Bajans want her to dress like a nun or muslim woman......This is 2009 and I live in New York.....I have seen people even in Barbados walk the streets in Bridgetown and my mouth drop open just seeing their attire. Give the girl a break and stop hating. Barbadians never embrace their own and it is really sad. Regarding her videos, they read too much into these things, she is trying to be unique and that is a good thing. No matter what Rihanna does, there will be someone to criticize her and try to bring her down. To Rihanna, I say keep doing you and being successful. In the American music business you have to try to stay popular,so if that involves outrageous videos and dressing the part, so be it. Just brush off the negativity and the haters out there Rihanna. Proud of You Rihanna

I see women blaming men for getting them pregnant and leaving them after with a child and the man not paying child support every day on blogs, and TV talk shows like Oprah's etc. you name it. While in those situations, most if not all, of those women had total control of that situation, unless they got raped of course. Rihanna couldn't or can't control if a man hit's her the [first time], and in that situation she left Chris Brown after the assault, so I don't know why so much women are blaming her for what happened.

I wish people would stop being so hypocritical. First of all how many grown women go through domestic violence and do not speak out. She has the opportunity now even if it coincides with the release of her new album. Sometimes people wait for that time to speak. Second I have seen some bajans walking the stree in ridiculous wear so why is her attire being ridicule. It is for the music, does she wear that stuff on the street on a dily basis. Some of you need to separate the girl from her profession, there is a real life that is lived out of the spotlight. It is the entertainment biz. She is still young and has time to grow as a person.

It is really amazing how negative and mean people can be. Obviously she has talent, that's why she is on every magazine cover and is well know all over the world. I am impressed in a time period of 3 years that she has accomplished so much and let me add that is is only 21 years old. So what if she dresses sexy, she is young and beautiful. All those women complaining and being negative are jealous. They wish they could leave Barbados and become as famous and successful as this girl. She did not appoint herself Ambassador to Barbados so stop putting her as every young girl's role model. Rihanna is there to please herself not every Barbadian. Rihanna you rock and I am proud of you. To the person who said she has no class or talent, well I don't see Vogue or Couture designers knocking down your door............She has the look that the famous designers want.Stop hating and be proud of one of your own. Rihanna is the most famous person that ever came out of Barbados. Also to the idiot that commented that she is not intelligent, she went to Combermere helloooooooooooooooooo. rihanna : 11/4/2009
rihanna did not ask to be an ambassador, i always think its a mistake to place those 'honours' on young people. And to those who sit in judgment it amazes me that human beings feel that they can live their lives they way they want, but others must live to please them. She is a 21 year old woman, she will make mistakes, she will wear sexy clothes, its what young girls do and then she will mature and grow out of it. Above all its her life and she does not owe bajans anything, its between her and God. We don't know what goes on in that industry and to those who complain about free concert. I sat and watched bajans sit stoic and turn up their noses when she performed at the BMAs, are you going to pay the band, the crew the stylists the dancers etc? stupseeee

Unwise Choice - You have it right : 11/4/2009
Let's see if my comment will be posted. I did write a comment earlier and it was not posted. I guess to much facts were included. Anyhow, just so you know "Unwise Choice" comments tells me that she is aware of "certain" happenings. First let me say that when people comment on what you don't like, it does not mean that they are jealous of Rihanna. They are many people who would not trade that life for the one they currently have...I am one of them. When I "through reliable sources" found out about our daughter of the soil, my heart melted and I cried. I am not speaking about the Chris Brown issue...This poor girl needs help. She is not happy. I will say no more. Also, the interview is a smoke-screen...always done in the world of entertainment to accomplish an increase of CD sales through sympathy...this is normal. P.S Hint: The triangle sign made by he thumbs and 4th fingers on the hand is a solute to satan..it is not the rocawear sign as "they" will lead you to believe. I love you Rihanna...

Rihanna, had bad judgement : 11/4/2009
The only mistake Rihanna made was falling for Chris Brown, I said it the first time I found out they were a couple and I was right. His career was tanking back in 07 because his 1st single from his second album was trash and he conned Rihanna into a relationship (aka celeb couple similar to "Jay and Beyonce" = free media coverage) while she was on a high with "Umbrella" and she threw him a bone and his career then was jump started again, big mistake by her. Rihanna should of just concentrated on her music career at that time and forgot about men romantically in her life at that point. Chris Brown is the scum of the earth, he ruined his career and also managed to ruin Rihanna's along the way, just because he got mad at something that was said or done, if that was a grown man Brown would of walked away, most cowards do.

Usually when I am inclined to think to much of myself, I remind myself of the circumstances of that little boy growing up in Westbury Road to put things back in perspective. Rihanna, you have experienced international fame and success at such a young age and at such a whirlwind speed that is unprecedented for any Bajan girl, woman, man or boy. No one has walked this path before you although perhaps some may have come close. Whatever the issues, ALWAYS REMEMBER WHERE YOU CAME FROM FOR IT WILL ALWAYS BENEFIT YOU WHERE YOU ARE GOING. Commenting on Rihanna : 11/4/2009
I have read the other comments and for the most part they are okay. My question to the commentors how many of you when you were young and I mean between ages 10 to 21 or even now be willing to talk about a beating you received from a husband or lover? Is this everyday conversation do you start a conversation to any of your buddies with let me tell I got my ass kicked last night? So don't give advice unless you have lived it. I feel that unless you are very familiar with the industry that Rihanna is in, people should not make assumptions or put pressure on her about being an Ambassador for Barbados, it is a plus but so many more had gone on to fame and have not once recognized Barbados as part of their heritage. Suddenly this young girl plucked from our shores must be the savior? It is enough pressure trying to suddenly deal with instant fame and then always respectfully represent Barbados. That is a lot to ask of an inexperience and not fully matured individual. I speak from mild experience on a smaller scale. It is bad enough trying to mature enough to understand your own self and enjoy the things you like without having to now limit and change who you are because of a larger purpose; the mad house is full of people who had to limit of deny who they are for the greater good. I am not saying she should act and carry on in a lewd mannner but for God sake let the girl alone.

Please do not be deceived, you are not drawing close to God but you are getting FAR from Him. It seems to me that you have sold your soul for fame and fortune, willingly or unwillingly. Rhianna glad to c bak on her feet : 11/4/2009
AM glad she has finally spoken out about it. It takes guts to do that. Hope she remains close to God and chooses her boyfreinds wisley. Those of you who are disapointed in her clothing need to realize that she is part of hollywood and she has to do outrageous things sometimes to make money and remain on top otherwise she will have to look for a new job. She has wear very artistic clothing which is at times revealing. Therefore if u dont like it ,dont look at it. very simple. How many Barbadians do you know THAT will or have ever been featured in VOGUE Italy, or in GLamour. not VERY MANY and models find it hard to get that far... VERY HAPPY TO SEE HER BAK ON TOP CHARTS AGAIN TO J below....

It took me years and three grown kids before I spoke out about my physical and mental abuse. It took Rihanna only nine months - she has the strength it takes. I commend her.

Glad to see that Rihanna is making some mileage and I wonder how much money out of her ordeal. I wonder if she was never identified if she wouldn't have returned to Chris. I believe that he capitulation is the job of a good agent, not that she has any sense.

Rihanna is Rihanna, when this blow over she is going right back to the same thing. She got bit by the hollywood bug. She is living large and wild, you live by the sword you will die by the sword. She is a good girl gone bad. I don't feel sorry for her. Tough!!!

Rihanna : 11/4/2009
Rihanna is a disgrace to Bdos. The Prime Minister, David Thompson should have egg on his face for naming her Ambassador to Bdos. How many more intelligent, successful, poised Barbadians out there that are making great strides and HELPING Bdos who does not get any recognition. She has yet to have a free concert in Bdos. What a damm shame! I do not consider her an Ambassador for the country I so love and surely not a Role Model to my daughter. She has gone a bit too far to sell records which is totally unnecessary. What will she do next...sell nude photo for publicity? Also, the only reason she is speaking out at this point is because her new CD is about to launch. Disappointed Bajan

When experiences come to bring us closer to God (paragraph#9) and we must remember to remain close to him thereafter. God does not require alot of long formal pray, he wants us to keep him at heart, invole him in all we do by seeking his guidance and always thank him for small mercies. Stay close to God now Rhianna as you continue to live and enjoy your moment in time. Some of us genuinely concerned about your welfare, but irrespective of that it's your relationship with God your one and only Judge that untimately matters. Retired

The Big Secret : 11/4/2009
An Acrostic Poem by Khaidji Domestic Violence Is A Big Secret Daughters of the soil have for many years On buckled knees shed blood and tears Made excuses for their black and blue eyes Excuses to cover up their domestic demise She didn’t get the advantage to wear a cloak The media had published a photo of her spirit, broke It was like beating her over and over again Completely taking advantage of all her pain Violation of body hurts and so does violation of privacy It was fair game to speak since she was a celebrity Our society gives no privacy for those in the spotlight Let up at no time and at difficult times, press on with might Everyone was there for her, extremely supportive No one though had the real comfort to give Cause being humiliated like this is nothing you’re prepared for Every woman knows it’s something they’ll always abhor It does make you close to God to hush the fear "Stronger, wiser and more aware" “At some point you are there alone” Being in that lonely place, all on your own It can feel like a dream, a nightmare Got little focus and you’ll thank God He is near Secretive about domestic violence is quite the norm Even the most talkative child is known to transform Can’t tell others that mummy and daddy fight Recurring blows and teenagers never talk, though it’s not right Every situation can be a learning experience, a chance to grow This taught her the big secret must be voiced for all women we know BajanPoetry.com

It's obvious she is going to speak out now, her album is coming out this month. Maybe she will think twice before making fun at Brittney Spears again. Remember how "classy" you were that night at the show? RP

: 11/4/2009
I have spoken to the parents repeatedly not to abandon Rihanna to the entertainment sharks which they headed not... My fear came true! If we look at the careers of Beyonce and Brook Sheilds, they mothers were with them constantly. Where is the mother of Rihanna? asleep!

A Cousin.

Respect! : 11/4/2009
I would like to suggest that readers check out the entire interview at http://www.glamour.com/women-of-the-year/2009/rihanna?mbid=synd_wonderwall_rihanna_feature. Rihanna's maturity and wisdom are evident. Falling is not the problem. It is what you do after you fall. And Rihanna has definitely gained from the hard knocks of the past year. The company that Rihanna has found herself in is absolutely amazing. The other women of the year are: Maria Shriver, Stella McCartney, Amy Poehler, Marissa Mayer, Serena Williams, Jan Aronson, Susan Rice, Euna Lee & Laura Ling, Maya Angelou and Michelle Obama. Maximum Respect due! Meanwhile we still have people like J criticising the way Rihanna dresses. She is on track to go down as one of the greatest. Open your minds and understand what she is about.

When you get lemons make lemonade : 11/4/2009
In spite of the humiliation she suffered Rihanna realised that she represented a group of people that still does not have a real voice. Even though she is still healing she is using her experience to shed light on a subject that still will draw laughs from some in society when really we should be supporting the victim and getting all involved counseling. I wish her continued success. ( still wish she would were less risque clothing at times but .... she is a celebrity so...)

Rihanna and God : 11/4/2009
being a bajan I was very proud of Rihanna, but I do think that she has taken the good girl gone bad thing too far. Having read her statement about getting close to God I do pray that she is being truthful, and will therefore be seeing her in a different light, setting a high standard for the young.

Rihanna Speaks Out : 11/4/2009
I am so proud of you. I knew When the time was right you would let us know what happened that night. Be strong, it will take some time, but that too shall pass. Forget the naysayers, they believe what they want to believe. Chris does not need to be in jail, he needs to be out and seeing how good you are doing without him is punishment enough if he really loved you. Keep your head up, give yourself sometime before you go back in a relationship. You can date but dont get serious. When you meet the right guy you will know, donot compromise youself. You are young and BEAUTIFUL. Good Luck in your career.

I presume that the full interview will have some real insight for women, because this clip does not. Is she still with Chris Brown? That is the question!!

Thank God Rihanna speaks her min : 11/4/2009
Rihanna is a srong young woman whom been through a stage of her life and i take it she will learn from it.Its sad when to see when the media needs imfo that the very person you trust shares that imfo for what ever rewards.I am a bajan man living in sweden with my wife and family and want to say its a shame how men can get fysical with a woman just to feel like power.Get well Rihanna Blessed

Rihanna has Changed : 11/4/2009
Rihanna I am so dissappointed in you recently. YOu are taking your Good Girl Gone Bad thing too far. You are an ambassdor for Barbados but I am not so sure if your new dress code is living up to that name. You have more money than any person at your age in Barbados can only dream off. Your country is small but very intuitive. Remember your roots.
