Back from the 'dead'

REYNZILL SCANTLEBURY says he doesn't know what happened to him but would like some answers.

Published on: 11/1/2009.

by MELISSA ROLLOCK

SOME PEOPLE call him the Ghost Who Walks, some the Living Dead and others Lazarus.

All of these nicknames are quite fitting for 46-year-old Reynzill Lorenzo Scantlebury who claims he has done what no other man has been able to do - he got up and walked out of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) morgue.

But it wasn't a miraculous resurrection because according to him, "I was never dead".

As Scantlebury, a car washer, recounts, it all began sometime last month after suffering one of his frequent epileptic seizures. He was walking somewhere in the vicinity of Green Hill, St Michael, not too far from his Whitehall, St Michael residence when he started to feel ill.

"I felt a seizure coming on, so I took one of my tablets. I usually walk with them. But the next thing I knew, Bruggadung! I was on the ground," he recalled.

He doesn't know much about what transpired after that but when he woke up, he was lying on a hospital bed.

"This female doctor was standing over me and she told me that she was going to release me. So I left and was headed towards the Globe Cinema [Upper Roebuck Street, The City], when I was upside down on the ground again.

"When I wake up, I was inside what I thought was a dark room; black and cold. So, I started kicking and this thing I was in slide out like a drawer. I look around and I see a man there sitting down eating.

"He was wearing a white hat, white shirt and white pants. I look around to see if I see a blanket because it was really cold. I didn't see any so I sat up and I asked the man, 'Excuse me, boss, you got a blanket?' At that time, I didn't know where I was.

"And the man sit down with a plate of food in he hand with all of he eyes open and he mouth with all the food in it open wide when he see the draw open. I keep asking him where my blanket? And he wouldn't answer me," recalled Scantlebury.

As he related, he stepped out of the drawer and turned around to gaze upon what looked like a huge refrigerator with a lot of drawers. He was still dazed and it did not dawn on him that he was in a morgue.

When Scantlebury looked down, he realised he was wearing only a disposable diaper and a toe tag on his right foot.

"I popped it off [the tag], look at the man, tell he that I ask he for a blanket and he ain't pay me no mind so he could have it and I pelt it at he and I left.

"I walk out. When I walk out, I ask somebody where I was and they told me I just come out of the morgue and the man in there, he was told, was the morgue technician.

"I kept walking; it was night-time and I walked as far as where Marvo Manning live [in Hindsbury Road, St Michael] opposite Solidarity House. A woman came to me - not Marvo Manning - and I told her I hungry that I just come from the hospital and I wanted something to eat.

"She asked me how a big man like me could have on a pamper so I kept walking until I get home.

"It is a good thing I wake up in time because someone told me that the morgue technician would've been getting ready to cut me," he said.

Since leaving hospital, Scantlebury has told his incredible story to his friends and acquaintances. There are huge chunks of information missing from his story because he does not remember much as a result of his seizures. But there are burning questions he said he would like answered.

"As far as I hear, I had no pulse, no breath, no nothing when I blacked out.

"Everybody telling me that I must've been in a coma, I just don't know. I don't know how long I was in hospital; it might have been days, it might have been weeks, I don't know.

"I don't feel good about what happened to me, but what can I do? Nobody is taking me seriously. All I know is that I would like somebody to tell me exactly what happened to me and what is going on. Really and truly I don't know; I am at a loss," said Scantlebury, who in addition to epilepsy, suffers from rectal cancer and has slurred speech and limited mobility from a stroke.

He said he shouldn't be working but needs to wash cars to remain financially independent.

A prominent physician who preferred anonymity, told the SUNDAY SUN that while it was unlikely, it was not impossible that Scantlebury was pronounced dead and sent to the morgue by error.

"If that happens then that would have to be a mistake. It is unlikely but anything is possible. Usually, whichever doctor is on duty would do that [pronounce someone dead]. The doctor on duty would assess the person and if they are not breathing and they don't have any pulse then the doctor can pronounce the person as dead.

Mistake possible

"However, the physician may be inexperienced in doing that job; a new intern could make a mistake like that, but usually you do certain checks. You check for a pulse, respiration, reflex, reaction to light and any movement of the body as well as the temperature of the body.

"If the person is on ICU on a monitor, you look for the heart rate and that is easy. But on the general ward, it is unlikely that something like that could happen," said the doctor.

He added that if an individual passed away at a location other than the hospital, the police would be called in and then the police doctor, who goes to the scene to pronounce the person dead whether it was a natural or unnatural death.

Police at the District "A" Police Station said they did not have any reports of a sudden death for anyone by the name of Reynzill Scantlebury.

Management at the QEH said they would be carrying out an investigation into the matter. Communications specialist Katrinah Best said on Friday that while they had no record of a Reynzill Scantlebury, they did have a record of a Scantlebury with a similar first name and the middle name Lorenzo.

However, she said that that Scantlebury was 49 years old. She said he died on one of the C Wards on October 4, was sent to the morgue the same day, and removed from the hospital by a funeral home on October 9.

This story is starting to sound fishy and I am tired of seeing it everytime I log on. Now he walked all that way in a diaper and no one said anything or was suspicious??

What I Happened : 11/6/2009
This story has to many holes where is the technician, the woman in Hindsbury Road, St Michael. How can this man walk to WhiteHall, St. Michael, in a diaper and no one stopped him or called the cop? Did he overdose and hallucinogen? Or cried wolf to many times? This is stranger than fiction. Interesting! Where is Sherlock Holmes, I want to know what happened too.

Interesting Story

People this man said he left the hospital after he was seen by a female doctor and he headed towards the globe,How did he got back to the hospital?

QEH GETTING WORSE AND WORSE EACH DAY .I BELEIVE THIS MAN BUT NOBODY AINT GOING TO BELEIVE HIM CAUSE HE COME LIKE MISTER NOBODY DE QEH WANT OVERSEEING CAUSE IT GETTING WORSE. AND TALK ABOUT NURSE" BARBADOS GOT A LOT OF NURSES FORM OUTSIDE IN DE OEH ,HOW BARBADOS DONT KNOW IF THEM PAPER REAL OR FAKE ,STOP KICKING OUT DE KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL EARLY AND GIVE THEM A CHANCE , LIKE A LOT OF BAJAN HERE IN THE UNITED STATES WE GOT KICK OUT EARLY BUT WAS ABLE TO GO AND FINISH OUR EDUCATION AND BECAME SOMEONE WITH A FRIST CLASS JOB. BUT NOW BARBADOS GOT THESE NURSE AND DOCTOR IN THE HOSPITAL THAT CANNOT DECLARE SOMEONE DEAD WHAT A SHAME. I CAN SAY QEH WAS A GOOD HOSPITAL BACK IN THE DAYS SAVING THE LIVES OF A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM OTHER DIFERANT ISLANDS BUT SINCE I UNDERSTAND THE GOVERMENT DON'T HAVE THE QEH NO MORE IT RUN DOWN, I WISH IN THE FUTURE I CAN HEAR OF A QRGANIZATION HERE IN THE USA WITH A GROUP OF BAJAN WHO CAN GET TOGETHER AND MAKE THIS HOSPITAL BACK TO WHAT IT WAS "IT IS RUN DOWN NEEDS TO BE RENOVATED BAD'AND EQUIPMENT CHANGE .THE GOVERMENT NEEDS TO STEP BACK IN AND TAKE CONTROLL BECAUSE HEATLH IS IMPORTANT.I ALWAYS SAY TO MYSELF IF I HAD TO WIN SOME MONEY THE FRIST THING I WILL DO IS RENOVATE QEH, ANYWAY MR SCANTLEBURY CASE NEEDED TO BE INVESTEGATED AND NOT TO BE LAUGH AT CALLING HIM LAZERUS GIVE THIS POOR MAN A BREAK.

I WISH QEH IMPROVE (USA)

Alive or dead : 11/4/2009
I do agree with the Dr. there are certain makers you look for before you send down a person to the morgue. But it isn't impossible. Maybe the Dr. that did the pronuncing.. didn't do his job., mabe he was tired, & he got a nurse to just tell him what he wanted to hear.. that to can happen. Another thing. on Oct. 9th who did the undertaker take fr. the morgue. There is alot unanswered ?'s. But not impossible. I'm really sorry that he got mad & tear of the tags & throw @ that tech. in the morgue. but in over til the fat lady sings.

IMAGINE HOW MUCH PEOPLE MUSSEE DEAD ALIVE AT Q.E.H? I WORKED AT A HOSPITAL IN BARBADOS FOR A WHILE, AND I KNOW THAT WITH UNDERSTAFFED, OVERWORKED EMPLOYEES, THINGS WILL GO WRONG. HOPE THAT THIS IS A LESSON FOR THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND THE GOVERNMENT ON A WHOLE. PUT MORE MONEY AND RESOURCES INTO TRAINING YOUR PROFESSIONALS AND STOP WASTING IT ON TOURISM! UKBAJAN.

Rippleys Believe it or not ! Here we go again !Another poor black man story . Alot of things at the QEH do not work that is a given ,however it is not the worse place to go . For an institution that opens 247 ,365 it does okay .My question is was the fridge in the morgue not working ? I ask because if it was cold he would be dead a second time if he was not before . Would the heat and lack of air not do him in . Or was the drawer half opened to let in air ? You see for a man who had a seizure he was strong and very coherant.I have been a witness to persons who had petite mal and gran mal seizures and when they came to none of them knew what happened prior to the "fits". This must be divine intervention.Let us not be so quick to condemn the doctors or the institution .It is true that we all can make mistakes . let us get the facts correct. Some people like to run away with stories and others like some lawyers are opportunists . Sue the government ! who is the government ? The ones paying will be us . There is no man /woman or minister first name or surnamed government.

I can't believe some of you don't understand what coverup is all about. If you were the man in the white coat who should not have been eating in the morgue, would you come foward now, especially also since you did nothing to help a man asking for a blanket in a hospital. If you were a Doctor who pronounced a living man dead would you now come foward or wait until they find you.If you worked in Medical Records Office and say that a poor man diagnosed with seizures and even cancer, who didn't diagnose himself has no hospital notes, would you now admit your mistake or keep your mouth shut tight and hope they never know it was you?

Not cold enough. : 11/3/2009
You people know very well that the cold storage in the morgue is out of operation more than it works and that the bodies often have to be kept elsewhere? Perrhaps it was broken or malfunctioning and that is why Lorenza is still here.

QEH : 11/3/2009
I am convinced that the majority of the medical staff at the QEH need extensive training. At times their medical equipment used to provide diagnosis for patients is not working. The government should in my opinion do more for their people and invest more in healthcare. They are doing a poor job.

same : 11/3/2009
My brother does have seizures, after the seizure for a couple of hours he dont know what happen it takes him a while to come to himself plus he goes to the bathroom on him self sometimes,so this man would be dirty if he went to the bathroom on himself and out of it,to blame the hospital is ridiculous, where is the tag, were is all these people that he say he came in contact with, you walk around barbados wit a diaper on and no body notice i dont think soooo

Back From The Dead : 11/3/2009
It seems that everyone is getting bent out of shape and laying blame all over the place, when we should really be asking why the reporter who filed the story did not conduct a complete investigation into the who/what/where and when. Also what about the editor who allowed this story to be filed when the reporter did such a shoddy job. this story is an embaressment to all and makes our country look as if it is full of idiots.

Dead Man : 11/3/2009
Why is everyone ignoring this man's story. This needs to be investigated and this man treated properly. He has two serious problems 1). Cancer, 2) Epilepsy. Get a move on people. Acknowlege that an error was made and endeavour never to have something like this repeated. Ottawa

Dead Man Alive : 11/3/2009
It is possible that this man was declared dead and literally cam back to life. If he was in a coma, the colf temperature in the morgue would had preserved his vital organs, therby, allowing full recovery as he came out of the coma. People do not dismiss this event. I believed it happened.

Listen very carefully and the truth shall be revealed...as soon as someone is of lesser financially means people always assume that they are right and everyone else is wrong.. think people...cold this man be telling a lie?? is the hospital telling the truth?? FIRST that Nationnews should have done a more thorough story investigation and printed it in total rather than feed people this story one day at a time in order to make it appear that someone is lying...(just gotta hope this get printed)... secondly.. anyone who suffers with seizures usually are so weak after an episode that they can hardly talk..how do I know? Because someone close to me suffers with them and I have witness first hand what happens...so here are my questions? 1. How did this man end up in the mourge fridge, which is cold as death itself and survive? 2. Where is the toe tag that is placed on a dead persons' toe 3. Isnt the hospital tag one that is placed on admission of a ward and the A&E when you are being observed 4. How did he end up in adult diapers and be in a very cold place and survive to tell the tale? 5. How did anyone at QEH and outside see him in diapers and not stop him? 5. Why are the witnesses who saw him at the mourge, hospital, streets after his awakening not breaking down the Nations' door prior to his story breaking and telling a tale of such an awakening..................there are holes in this story on both sides...

looking for the truth

Back from the "dead" : 11/3/2009
It is said that this man has limited mobiliby because of a stroke, so if that is the case, where did he get the strength to kick open a door that is supposed to be tightly closed, did anyone ever think of that? Also, please don't be so quick to condemn the QEH, there are two sides to a story, you heard his, now, wait for theirs, and to the writer of this article, the word is LAZARUS and not LAZARETH. If this story were true the morgue technician would be down by the deep water harbour by now!you all Bajans have to take medcine seriously a first year medical student would know if you were dead.in coma with no respirations after five minutes you are really dead.See if this man was ever a patient at Psy,Hospital.

WHAT A LAUGH!

Scary! : 11/2/2009
I believe him because he is not that educated to know about a hospital morgue! I know him from past experiences. He had a toe tag and a pamper on well I also believe that part. If I was in his position I would have screamed until the dead occupying the other drawers came out! That is grosss.......

Grossed Out!

BACK FROM THE DEAD : 11/2/2009
My sincere hope is that this story is proven to be true as I believe it to be. The morgue technician owes it to his conscience to corroborate this story. Of course, especially in these financial times, he might be protecting his job by not speaking out, but he needs to look deep within himself and do the right thing. If the hospital is at fault ..so be it..mistakes happen..but Mr. Scantlebury's human rights/moral rights should be considered. The lab technician, the QEH director, the political representative, or someone else, needs to shed the light on this issue. Mr Scantlebury shoull be made to know exactly what happened to him.

Don't understand why so many people complain about it being so easy to get out of the drwer of the dead. Good thing it was for you Reynzill, otherwise the cold could have either killed you , or even worse rendered you unconcious again, delaying your departure and detaining you for that date with the morgue technician's knife next day, so it's a blessing it was so easy to slide open, and my suggestion to the Q.E.H.? KEEP IT THAT WAY, who knows how many unfortunate others may have need to go the same route!!! Incidentally Renyzill- any bright lights while you were out? Anyone telling you not your time yet, so please go back?? Just Curious!!!!

I do believe what this man is saying is true. I do not believe he made this story up. I only wish that he got the name of the morgue technician an then made a report to the police because I think there is going to be a cover up. THE QEH CEO came over the VOB station and is refuting this man's story. It seems to me that the hospital is scrambling to protect themselves from this embarassing situation

Suspicious : 11/2/2009
I find this story really suspicious. How comes this "dead man" is the only one telling this story. Why hasn't the eating mortuary tech or nurse stepped forward to say this took place? Where is the proof that he was there the 1st time and was dismissed? At least that record should be on file. Where are the witnesses who took him to or called the hospital? So far, it’s his word against every1 else and I am having a lot of difficulty believing him. I'm waiting expectantly for the conclusion.

: 11/2/2009
This is quite incredible. My son suffered Grand Mal seizures and after the episode he was always so drowsy and lathargic that he was unable to go anywhere or do anything for at least 24 hours. Now, with all the kicking and noise of this man kicking the morgue attendant was still eating? The noise did not attract his attention? I think that this man had a serious dream. To Miss dash in Florida, if this man sues the government of Barbados, and wins the case, how long do you think the money would last him?

This is incredible! How did this man walk so far wearing only a Pampers, and no one found this unusual? Also, is it that easy to get out of a drawer in the morgue? Just asking. Pesonnally, I would be claustrophobic, and mad as hell, and causing such a racket that the technician would have been long gone!

Dead Man Walking : 11/2/2009
Why are we so quick to pass judgement when this story has not even been investigated. This sound to me like someone who is looking for fame and fortune. Have any of you ever passed out and know that you did? After you come back to yourself after you have passed out, you don't remember anything that happened but this man can tell you where, when and how he passed out not once but twice. Isn't that strange to you? Another thing, it might be possible but I really don't think someone would sit in the margue and have lunch...and how is it that that drawer was so easy for him to kick open. This sound like somebody looking for attention, he need to be checked throughly and the situation investigated before anyone can pass judgement on the QEH.

LIVING DEAD : 11/1/2009
I believe this man. The QEH needs to realize that this was a mistake possibly by some intern doctor. There were many people that were burried alive in Barbados & St Vincent in the pass. There are some sickness that cause all the the organs to stop for a while and the hospital needs to do more research and diagnose patients properly.

A toe tag is attached for indentification but what happened to the stroud as far as I know no deceased body is send to the morgue naked unless this is the custom in Barbados. And why did he throw away the toe tag this story has a lot of holes in it. Bajan US

Possible Mistaken Identity : 11/1/2009
It is unfortunate if what is being reported is accurate. If Reynzill story is not accurate then QEH has to be able to produce discharge records that show he was released or he self-discharged. Although, it does seem like this could be a case of mistaken identity, given the fact that another persons with similar names died on the same day. Let us hope the truth is revealed

I believe him. However, as stated he is a poor man and many will NOT. Quite possibly his pulse or heart beat was low enough to not be detectable except by llistening carefully - even with a stethoscope. No-one will admit it and he has not got enough political clout or strength to have anyone care enough to help him prove it. Unfortunately, this story and others like it will die an unnatural death.

A human being suffers a terrible ordeal and everyone starts criticising 'Barbados'. The country did not do this to him, certain individuals did. This all goes back to how we treat each other. How we view each other and what we think the other person deserves. I do not care how poor you are, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity and in this case he was at a Hospital, where the primary issue is 'Care'. If his story is true, he obviously did not get that. How can we as people be so dimissive of others because they have what we assume to be 'less' than we do. We come into this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing.

Before jumping on the bandwagon re the above incident and ridiculing the hospital, please check the ligitimacy of the story. If this is the individual who currently lives in Whitehall, I think that the story needs to be checked and scrutinised. Is the man telling the truth or is he still dreaming. The story just do not sound right, and I truly think he should be thoroughly check by a a doctor before blaming anyone. To be honest the story in not coherent. Sorry, but I think it is a hoax. I think he should also be check for any substance that he was taking that might have caused him to be illusional.

Mr Scantlebury, I want you to say thank God for Jesus. Not many People were as lucky as you and I want you to please give your life to Jesus and every morning that you awake to open your eyes, you have to count your blessings. I cannot understand what is going on in Barbados these modern days. You mean to tell me that Barbados do not have their own patholigist by now? That is a shame. Only God knows how many people were pronounced dead before they were even dead. Sue them and take everything that they have. I remember when I was a little girl growing up back there, I used to hear that many people got buried alive and that is a big shame. I wished that you were in america because you could have owned a part of the USA. Get a good lawyer and maybe you can own your own business there and get the good medical attention that you need. Please do not sit down on this because something has to wake Barbados up. It is about time that those autorities wake up and smell the coffee. I am surprised that the guy who was there did not faint and drop his food that he was eating. How can he eat in that place with all those did people? He really has a good stomach. You should have gotten his name before you left and had called the police right away. Matbe you were disoriented and I am sorry for the oddeal that you had to go through. Please give your life to God in the name of Jesus. This is only a wakeup call my friend.

this happen because the man is poor, and probably picked up as a vagrant person. The doctor that pronounce this man dead, needs to go back to medical school because you have to check all vital signs. Barbados have lots of class issues going on. Everyone should be treated fairly and professionally. The island needs more dialysis machines, and they could even have sites other than the hospital where people that needs dialysis can go and be hooked up to a machine. They should not have to go only to the queen Elizabeth hospital. I was saying for a long time that barbados needs to get with the 21st century.
