Two women hurt in accident

Published on: 11/26/2009.

TWO WOMEN were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday evening after the small truck they were travelling in ran off the road in Greenland, St Andrew.

Police from the nearby Belleplaine Station responded to the accident, as well as a number of members of the Barbados Rescue Service, a division of the Barbados Fire Service.

The white truck ended up in a bushy area, and both women - driver Veronica Murray of Chalky Mount, St Andrew, and visitor Sherry Ann Benjamin - had to be removed from the vehicle by rescuers using the Jaws of Life device.

Both were transported by ambulance to the QEH, where they were treated for injuries, none of which were life-threatening, according to police reports. The accident occurred around 3:10 p.m. (BA)

Standards and regulations need to be set for the cheaply made vehicles imported and sold in countries like Barbados. These little paper thin vehicles that offer no adequate safety features like crumple zones to protect its passengers are nothing more than overpriced death traps. These vehicles are way below all safety standards required for vehicles sold in the US. When will we set our standards or will below standard continue to be acceptable?

It is not a question of liking small country roads more and more people in Barbados are owning cars as the public transport provided does serve the people adequately. Therefore proper roads need to be built also proper sidewalks provided. It is strange I visit Barbados on a regular basis some places there are side walks on one side of the road or you be walking and then the sidewalk disappears with more cars on the road it is becoming more dangerious for pedestrians to walk around.

I do admit we have to be MORE careful when driving on our roads However as our Country Develops and we import all the various sizes/makes of vehicles we should take a page out of Bermuda's book as to the SIZE AND NUMBER OF VEHICLES a HOUSEHOLD can have Our poor roads cannot take the pressure. I am a property owner of CLERMONT, WEST ROAD and I am scared to walk in my area the roads in the development when started were CERTAINLY not built for the type of traffic we are having now I do hope that the Minister responsible would take a drive through the area to witness for himself what goes on that strip of road which connects to the Highway. It is in SERIOUS need of urgent attention There is one house in particular with a Prickly type of BUSH right on to the road dangerous to Vehicles much more to pedestrians. Please look into this road

All these little country roads need rebuilding and widening at the same time. Glad it was no worse.
