BARBADOS could see a 50 per cent increase in rainfall and daily temperatures topping 35 degrees Celsius in a number of years.
Dr John Charlery, a former deputy director of Barbados Meteorological Services, and a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Cave Hill Campus, St Michael, made that projection yesterday at the CARIBSAVE stakeholders' workshop at Hilton Barbados, St Michael.
"Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Dominica are seeing annual changes and increasing changes," Charlery said.
Rainfall patterns had changed and there could also be more droughts in certain parts.
"Sea levels will rise between 11 and 77 centimetres. There will be more intense hurricanes and extreme drought. Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean will see a change of up to 50 per centin precipitation.
"Temperatures will be greater than 30 degrees Celsius about 280 days of the year. And up to more of 35 degrees Celsius. That is not happening now, but it is predicted in the future," he said.
He also said that the Caribbean Basin was susceptible to storm development in April which was earlier than normal.
Changes in rainfall would also affect agriculture.
The climate changes that are causing the apparent rise in sea levels could bring intrusion of salt water in Barbados' water, a larger storm surge and more coastline erosion.
The increased frequency of hurricanes, he added will not only affect human settlement but also tourism and warned that "earlier effective action, will cost countries, like Barbados, less".

Tell this to Mr Owen our last Prime minister he sold all of our land to people from all over the world to build big houses, cutting down our trees .
Dodge is a fool : 11/5/2009
Dodge, yes, climate change has been happening for millions of years but you would be a fool NOT to believe that humans, now more than ever, are ACCELERATING & CONTRIBUTING to climate change. And you are a bigger fool to believe that there is nothing we can do to change it. Where do they breed these simpletons?
Preparedness : 11/5/2009
Finally, I am happy that someone who has the capability to predict what is likely to happen in the Caribbean, is speaking out. Blind Bartaemus would tell you that climate all around the world is changing and Barbados is not exempt. We have been experiencing a lot of coastal erosion which should tell us that the climate is changing. We have also had an earth tremor about two years ago. Should this be telling us something. The government agency dealing with disasters should be seriously work with the hospital, defense force, churches, ambulatory services, etc. to provide a step-by-step approach to disaster preparedness to the public. I am yet to hear anything about local emergency plans, emergency communications, disaster supplies kit, evacuation, emergency public shelters, animals in disaster, and information specific to people with disabilities. If we should wait for something to happen to decide what we are going to do, it will be too late.
Climate Barbados : 11/5/2009
Dr.Charlery your projected prognoses could be 80 percent correct.I would imagine the Ministries most involved in this type of preparedness would be Ministries of Agriculture,Fisheries Science and Technology,Ministries of Transportation and Works, Ministries of Defence and Finance.

I dont believe it;I am not convinced
FOOD FOR THOUGHT : 11/5/2009
Well it is said that man has destroyed the ozone layer, and consequently the Artic ice is swiftly melting. It is also believed that meat eating is a major cause of global warming since we are demolishing too much rain forest for meat production (tell that to the Bajan meatmouts)and pollution in all forms is at it's maximum. I have read somewhere that the entire earth's stratosphere is changing and that eventually we will have a winter (snow) season in Barbados. I am sharing a website sent to me for those who are interested. www.SupremeMastersTV.com Retired
50% more rainfall in Barbados likely : 11/5/2009
NASA published a reported recently that states and I quote " the likelyhood of a decrease in hurricanes is more possible with climate change". The reason for this is the fact that the upper level winds will be stronger and the Sahara Dust thicker. Yes there is climate change, but don't let all of these so called experts fool you. They don't know why the climate is changing and not to look silly they have to find some answer. Climate has changed for millions of years and there is nothing that man can do about it,we have to put in place a plan to meet the change, but not to panic and run around with our haeds in the air saying the sky is falling and believe me it will not happen in 20 years or 100 years
The Real Agenda Behind the Climate Change Scam. : 11/5/2009
Various think tanks in the 1970’s decided that one of the most effective ways to bring in a World Government was through creating a perception of a global threat that would require a global solution. They said that using a global environmental threat would suffice. Scientist make advancements by getting grants so the elite established grants to study global warming which has morphed into climate change and as we all know he who pays the piper calls the tune. If you are being paid to find something you tend to find just that. But recently over 30,000 scientists worldwide who are independent thinkers have signed a petition saying that the science is not nearly as dogmatic as some would have us believe. Did you know that the Antarctic ice cap is larger now than it has been in decades? Did you know that the global temperature is lower now and has fallen for the past 10-20 years according to the UN. But I guess these are inconvenient truths when a secret agenda is being foisted on the unsuspecting masses. Scientific models have limited use with an eco system that is so complex and have a dubious history. When one studies it they will find that it is truly junk science.
