TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Ayanna Maughn scored twice to lead Springer Memorial "A" to the Senior Girls title in the CRS Building & Maintenance Schools Indoor Hockey tournament yesterday at the gymnasium of the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Springer "A" defeated Alexandra 2-1 to complete the double, having secured the Under-15 crown 24 hours earlier with the same scoreline against the same opponents.
Alexandra, beaten finalists in three categories, finally got their hands on a trophy when they saw off double-chasing Garrison Secondary 3-2 in a thrills-a-minute Senior Boys' final.
Captain Omar Walker netted twice and set up the third for Khodi Gibson, while Shaquille Callender was a late hero with a goalline clearance with the last play of the match. Garrison, the Under-15 winners, got their goals from Marlon Daniel and Romario Howell.
First-former Maughn made a swift impact in the Senior Girls showdown, pouncing on indecision in the Alexandra defence to slot home from close range for a 1-0 lead.
Alexandra settled down and were level three minutes later when captain and key play-maker Shakeira Sandiford scored with a firm penalty corner push.
But Springer restored their lead just before half time when Maughn powered a shot through a crowded defence into the far corner.
The second half see-sawed with neither team able to convert, but Springer's defence fended off five successive penalty corners in the last two minutes to hang on.
The Senior Boys' final was even more absorbing, with Garrison taking an early lead through Daniel.
Alexandra were level within a minute as Walker produced an excellent reverse stick finish to make it 1-1.
The St Peter school came out firing in the second period and took a deserving 2-1 lead after fine approach play from Callender was finished off by Walker from close range.
Walker soon turned provider as he squared for Gibson to make it 3-1 with three minutes remaining.
Garrison surged forward to try to find a way back and Romario Howell's penalty corner conversion with 60 seconds remaining gave them a lifeline.
The Paddock Road school won another penalty corner on the buzzer and were inches away from forcing extra time but Callender saved on the line and cleared the danger.
