Royal water supply

by MARIA BRADSHAW

NOT A DROP of water from the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) will be used to service the 18-hole golf course to be constructed by Royal Westmoreland.

That's because owner of the St James resort John Morphet, who purchased the Lancaster sugar plantation where the new golf course is to be built, will also construct a reservoir that can hold 60 million gallons of water.

The reservoir will service the new golf course as well as the existing one at Royal Westmoreland, St James.

"One of our biggest issues was the water issue. We had environmental studies conducted and we decided to take the route to build our own reservoir to capture the water which usually goes into the gully and then out to sea," Morphet told the SUNDAY SUN in an exclusive interview.

He also gave his assurance that there would be no chance of chemicals or pollutants entering or leaving Royal Westmoreland.

Natural-looking

Furthermore, he said the reservoir would be "more natural-looking" than the dam built at Farmers, St Thomas, that services the Apes Hill golf and polo project.

Morphet, a British billionaire who bought Royal Westmoreland five years ago, is also hoping to get Town Planning Department approval to build a 100-room hotel, also at Lancaster.

"We have given it serious consideration. There is no hotel on Highway 2 - all the hotels are gone. But the location is good because it would have a Caribbean [Sea] view and it's very accessible without going onto the busy Highway 1. The big pull for the hotel will be the golf course," he said, adding that too many hotels on the island were being converted into condominiums.

Plans are also in the pipeline for what he called "a village-type concept" with townhouses and boutique shops for local retailers.

Morphet said that only local contractors would be employed to work on this multimillion-dollar project with 300 jobs to be created in the development of the golf course over a ten-year period and 100 permanent positions to be added to their staff of 300 at Royal Westmoreland.

A Hotel a Day ..... : 6/8/2009
This is a crying shame. How many golf courses does Barbados need? I continue to be dumbfounded by the nonsense happening in this place. Why continue to educate a population to serve in hotels and golf courses. What happened to the big brains in this country. Land is scarce, water becoming more scarce and polluted and we are hell bent on erecting playgrounds for the rich and famous. Exactly why is he doing this if not for the money; come on people; is he doing it for the population? I am sick and tired of the never ending erecting of hotels in this little place but as my father used to say "tek it light" for the crime statistics will soon render all this folly. Why cant we lure biotech industries here or set up our own, why cant we lead the region in other technologies. Methinks the sun has already scorched our brains.

Strange, strange, strange. I applied to NHS in 2007 for a lot at Lancaster. I was told that the government owned it and that it was at that time being surveyed, then roads and utilities would be put in. I was further told that the project at Kendall would be completed before Lancaster was ready. Is this the same Lancaster in St. James? I have not heard anything from NHS that the lot would not be coming.

300 jobs in what capacity? Mowing grass, watering lawns, caddy service only 300 + 100 jobs at what level? Hope not only maids and janitors.

Not good enough-our own : 6/7/2009
For houses, hotels, golf courses, cane fields, dumps....why do we need these outside investors. Mr Morphet is a billionare who invested, but what is his true calling or profession. It is easy with money to obtain any kind of research and studies, and I can bet you that very little if any of those studies were conducted by local firms. Prove me wrong. What is wrong with our brains? Why do we spend so much on education and think that our own don't are not good enough. There are appalling stories of 1)returning nationals not being accepted because other think they know too much or see themselves as better than anybody else, 2)the practice of government to spend big bucks in scholarships, exhibitions and study costs abroad on locals yet obviously deeming them as incompetent by engaging outsiders in big projects. Why are we sitting back and allowing this to happen to us bright educated people. DUMB

I was never treated so shabbily as when I took 2 local Bajans to the Westmoreland Golf Couurse this past winter. Unless this improves, the government should reject giving them more land to refuse Bajans access. Friend of Barbados

RE THE WATER SUPPLY : 6/7/2009
i AM ONLY A LOVER OF THIS PLACE SO HAVE TO VOICE MY CONCERN AT STILL ANOTHER GOLF RESORT APPLICATION! HAS IT CROSSED THE MIND OF THOSE WHO WOULD DEVELOPE THIS SORT OF THING THAT THE WATER WILL BE WASTED ON GREENS WHEN IT COULD BE GARDEN LAND TO FEED THE BODY AND SOUL RATHER THAN CHASE THE BALL. PLANT AND FEED .BUILD STRONG HOUSING AT AFFORDABLE COST TO ALL.CARE FOR THE NATION SEEMS TO BE BEST USE OF ANY LANDS , IF IT HAS TO BE A GOLF COURSE AT LEAST LOOK AT THE GREY-WATER REUSEABLE SYSTEM/ ?

I was of the opinion that the Government of Barbados was going to purchas this Lancaster Plantation to build housing for the lots of homeless poor Barbadians, How come it was sold to provide second and third vacation homes for the rich and famous while born and bread Barbadians can't find a spot to build on??????????????. This is a Question for the Government.

Fustrated Barbadian

Here we go again : 6/7/2009
Lets be real people. Investors dont invest if they dont think they will make their money back with returns. And you know what? These lands are not going to return to local ownership. But, if we are so foolish to offer the land then take it. When are we going to wake up and realize that we can't eat hotels and golf courses? I see barbados becoming a paradise for the rich and famous and all the locals becomming waiters and golf attendants. I made this statement about 7 years ago and it is slowly coming to reality.
