AN ANGLICAN PRIEST has complained about the trend to view preachers as entertainers and church life as part of the leisure and recreation industry.
Former bishop Sir Wilfred Wood told the congregation of St Lawrence Anglican Church yesterday that church life in Barbados was often treated "as part of an extension of the leisure and recreation industry".
People expected preachers to entertain in their sermons, even at funerals, he told a gathering that included Divi Southwinds Beach Resort staff marking their appreciation week.
Some commentators talked about "excellent" sermons that made "so many" mourners laugh, he reported.
In some churches, the congregation even applauded at the end of the sermon, Sir Wilfred noted.
In a sermon focusing on "the Kingdom of God" and "the kingdoms of man", Sir Wilfred said preachers and other Christians must be prepared to do Christ's bidding "irrespective of the conflict which this may bring about".
No matter how much people like a peaceful life and avoiding difficulties, there would be times when doing the right thing would bring them into conflict with others, he stated.
Sir Wilfred said Christians had to understand that at times they would be subjected to "ridicule, ostracism, various forms of injustices and hatred" for their views and actions.
If Jesus had been the kind of person depicted in the "complacent and non-challenging" version of religion "with which we seem comfortable today", nobody would have bothered to crucify him, Sir Wilfred said.
Being a Christian meant standing up for what was right, true and honest, he told the congregation.
It also meant calling on people to repent, even though "saying sorry is not part of our culture", he added.
Sir Wilfred was Bishop of Croydon in Britain from 1985 till 2003, the first black bishop in the Church of England. He was second in the 100 Great Black Britons list in 2004.
His sermon was one highlight of the church's celebration of the Feast Of Christ The King, which salutes factors including Jesus' conquering of sin, victory over death and his eternal reign.

questions the following of various institutions not the separate church of true believers! : 11/27/2009
If yo uwant to dip babies and force them into a buildign and call that church of coruse that will be boring. Domt lump the anglo saxon church of england with alive worship of non-denomination, non-institutional churches and their networks which have existed since Christ and 350yrs before council of Nicea forming catholic institution, and after the council to this day. I am an adult baptised man and my worhship is not boring..
Praise God

In my mind, sermons should get the congregation's attention and should be on topics that are happening in the world around us, we in our church has yet to
preach on how the Anglican church feels about the Gay & Lesbian community or how they will deal with it.

Sir Wilfred is correct! Church Leaders and choirs and those who serve the Almighty and are not there to entertain. If humour and fun rocks the spirit and brings us closer to God, then, it's all good! If the message we deliver, in whatever form is spiritually uplifting, then the Our Father would be well pleased. The Church Leaders, choirs and those who serve are doing the job. So many of us come to church to be entertained by church leaders and choirs. This is not why we serve! Whatever is delivered in the name of God, even if funny and entertaining is to move your spirit and your life into God's Kingdom and if humour and music works, then we may use it. And what is wrong with tears and laughter at a funeral? Check your spirit!

PSALM 100 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord and PSALM 150 therefore you try to keep all the noise in the world and the members forget about the real reason they are at church Joel 2:13 Rend your heart and not your garment .Persons have bent this one out of context long time ago. This means for some that you could come church with all your breast dropping down and the split right up in heaven . Come dress as you please even if it is in birthday party wear .Boy we sure put things in our own way and think we are so right . We must have some point or place where we can be at peace . I believe there should be a place where we can come away from the troubles of the world if only for an hour.A place where we can leave all the loud noises , the loud music and commune with our creator .It matters not which name we call him by. I do not see the reason why every thing in our lives have to be loud and constantly fast paced action .Life is not one big party .Some of us need to find out why we are here .What is our true purpose for being HERE ON EARTH .

Please do not lump all churches or pastors or preachers togather . The same way satan is out there in the world he is most certainly in the church .After all he has who is out there and he wants who is in the church .Therefore he will set the cat among the pigeons .He will send persons who are doing his work to infiltrate .Therefore everyone who go to church is not about seeking salvation. Some are looking for companions ,some are looking for position some are looking for various things but not not necessarily a relationship with Christ. Having said that Church is not an entertainment centre in the sense that you get belly laughs . The sermon and the entire mass or service can be pleasing to the ear though . It is not theater .Some of us get carried away by the antics of the teleevangelist .We think that this is the ideal way to worship. All their acts which can get them Grammy awards .Some may say how
"sweet" or dynamic the preacher is .At the end of the day after all the foot stomping and shouting and dancing in the isles ,the true message may be lost. This is 2009 but must we change everything for changing sake. Making adjustments to enhance certain areas i can agree with .Churches has varying styles of worship however at he end of the day they are worshiping The One true God .
GIVE ME THAT OLD TIME RELIGION : 11/25/2009
It is said that to bring the “young people” into the church, the church has to adapt to modern times… young people want to be amused and entertained. This being said it appears that to amuse the young at church the reverence in God’s house must be compromised. You either amuse and entertain or have an empty church and an empty church means less money in the collection plates. Like someone else asked what is the purpose of the church? To amuse and entertain? or to bring lost souls to know the Awesome God there is? I can understand a bit of laughter at a funeral during the reading of an obituary…but not in a sermon. In a sermon at a funeral I want to be reassured that God walked with the deceased through the shadows of death and that the deceased has a place in God’s kingdom. There are many organizations within the church where entertainment and amusement can be found. Priests and Bishops and Pastors have a duty as Shepherds to lead their sheep to greener pastures and when these shepherds stop along the way to “entertain” and “amuse” some of their sheep are surely going to stray….
HITTING THE NAIL ON THE HEAD : 11/25/2009
My sincere hope is that other Bishop and Priests are in agreement with Sir Wilfred and eventually the church can once again be that place where the soul can rejoice with that peace and quietness deep within. I am not saying that the sermon has to be boring but why all the applauding after a sermon…is it a concert? Yes a sermon can be peppered with some amusement but amusement at what expense? Sadly enough the church these days is more a business than a church…wand so I wonder what is the purpose of the church these days…
Entertain and Gain : 11/25/2009
Some people want to attend church, but they do not have any desire for spiritual change and life style change. So in order for the preacher to get good gifts, and favor, he/she has to entertain the ungodly group. Should the preacher touch on the sins of the people they most likely would not return. so, sin all week, dance all Saturday night, and even take one too many, and turn up to church for a good laugh. And, maybe the preacher is not reading and studying the Bible; so it is easy for him/her to turn a "Joker"
Some of Them : 11/24/2009
Some preachers preach the commandments of men, eat, drink and be-little their position with certain members of their flock. How can they then stand up for what is right. In a little while they will all be in hell fire.
Let us ask " What would Jesus do?"
Good messages can be interesting too : 11/24/2009
a preacher is not a comedian but does not have to be boring. the Word of God is alive, it is not dead, but some preachers make it so because they don't have revival in their souls. some messages are supposed to be serious, some are convicting, some are encouraging and some are supposed to bring joy. all are proper if the Word is being taught with the anointing of God and is a word in season. many preachers do not pray and ask God what He wants to say to His people at any given time, they preach what they want to preach, or copy somebody else's message and preach that. so then they get mad when nobody wants to hear their boring sermons that have no relevance to what we are going through in this day, because they have no connection to God. no, the church is not for entertainment or amusement but it does not have to be boring.
some preachers need to step down from their pulpits and let someone else preach.
Church not comedy fest : 11/24/2009
True that Rev.Wood . You are an elder but that does not mean you do not know what you are talking about or aer your thoughts obsolete .I have heard some of those things . The pastor does give some good jokes .Church is not Laugh it off or Comedy Fest. I always maintain if you want to go abroad you go to to the airport not the drug store.Sometimes a priest or pastor may add humor to bring across a message .However he is not there to give belly and side splitting laughter .He is not a clown .If you expect that whether at church or a funeral you should wait for the wake or when you get outside. But then again we in this island are hell bent on changing every thing .
Knowing time and place : 11/23/2009
Sometime ago a godly, goodly and much respected but also controversial Rev sought to "disturb" the reverence andd solemnity of Good Friday with his sermon. While much of what he said had some 'bearing,' it was the signifance of knowing the time and place that some like myself found offensive.

Laughter is the best medicine there have to be a balance in life all doom and gloom no joy and laughter. Is this where the church has failed? You taught us how to pray. but not to say THANK YOU. Not part of our culture you say? As a nation we should be making this this a #1 PRIORITY.
get with it : 11/23/2009
get with it preacher. Ur age shows that ur not wid modern times. Why must i go to a funeral and cry. I agree respect is due in God's house. Do u remember I must cry at a birth and laugh at a funeral. It is time to celebrate at a funeral. Guess you see why so many peopel r running from the church
Entertain yes! but how? : 11/23/2009
No REV, some of the preachers are providing the entertainment on their own. Others have gotten down to telling off the congregation when they question the silence of the church on some issues, or on the other hand, when preach political nothingness from the pulpit. You need to appeal to them at a retreat Rev.
