A GRANDMOTHER who tried to hide her grandson's drugs was placed on a bond, while the grandson whose drugs landed the matriarch of the family in trouble, was fined when they appeared in the District "A" Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Doreen Aletha Chase, 79, and Dwayne Hamilton Chase, 31, a steel-bender, both of Villa Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, were back before Magistrate Pamela Beckles after initially appearing before her earlier this week.
They had both been charged with possession, trafficking and possession of cannabis with intent to supply on Monday.
Doreen Chase had also been charged with handling the drug.
However, the charges of possession, trafficking and intent to supply against Doreen Chase were discontinued after her grandson took full responsibility for the drugs.
"It is because of your actions," Magistrate Beckles told the grandson, "that your grandmother is here."
The magistrate, however, chastised the woman saying she should have known better.
"You have got to understand that when law enforcement officers come and do their job, you should no get in their way," Magistrate Beckles told her.
The magistrate placed Doreen Chase on 12 months' probation. If she breaches it, she will have to pay $1 000 forthwith, or spend six months in prison.
Magistrate Beckles fined Dwayne Chase $5 000 by May 7, or 18 months in prison.
The court heard that lawmen executed a search warrant at the Chase home.
When they entered, they saw when the grandmother took up a package and tried to hide it.
Police also searched the grandson's bedroom and found another package of drugs.
One package contained 209 grammes, while the other had 195 grammes. The combined street value was about $2 000.

lol... Yeah, if only the police force here could do a hair follicle tests? I'm not so certain they might not find some of these drugs in her body too.
Whatever happen to when the ole people would make you account for your own misdeeds? : 2/13/2010
Things like "I love you and all, but you brought this on yourself." Instead, she is doing her best to encourage this big man to get into mischief. All two should face the full weight of the law. We need less people like Doreen 'bout hay. If your man is wrong, then tell him he's wrong. You can support them in the court, but don't try to cover their wrongdoings otherwise they will never realize what they are doing is wrong because they see their elders trying to break the law too.

Punish both : 2/11/2010
Forbll f you who really think that most normal other people in psition would hav done the same I believe that you ae wrong. The reasnwhy Barbados i the way t isis because our mothers are failing to teach and uphold right. Anything goes and the children can do no wrong.

This is so shameful.
Granny high : 2/10/2010
Granny did as some grandmothers and mothers are doing today .Remember grandmothrs are not only 60 years old now ,we have some at 45 and God knows younger .This granny is like some we have that all the boys shout out .Do not think it is always out of respect for the elderly in the community.Grans are not suspects so they can hide anything . For posters here who think that this is an isolated case think again .She got caught red handed ,what about the others that were not ? Parents keep upholding their children and grands in illegal behaviour.Yes it is your child but wrong is wrong . If you start wrong you end wrong .Do not encourage them to smoke it .If they do, not around you keep miles and miles off . If they get caught let them learn the hard way .

This comment is about the case of the
murder accuse Corey Rollins that the Prosecutor,Ch.Leacock was trying to
over rule the findings of the Psychia-
trist that Corey Rollins is competent
to stand trial and represent himself.
In today`s paper,it said "Murder ac-
cused is fit to plead."This decision
was made by a jury of 8 of the 12 members.
This is telling me that the 8 jurors
are better qualified Psychiatrists than
Dr.Connell as Prosecutor Charles Leacock
believes.What else is next?

Is this young man employed? How will he pay the fine? That's probably what got him into drug dealing to begin with. Why not let him work the fine off. Studies have shown that imprisoning these small time dealers does not work. They're usually poor, young and minority people who will get stuck with a criminal conviction that will stand in the way of future employment while the suppliers
escape justice.
Granny was only trying to protect him. Most people would do the same but she should have done something sooner unless she was involved too.
gran ma : 2/10/2010
YOU ALL HAVE A LOT TO SAY BUT IF IT WAS ANY ONE OF YOU IN HER SHOES YOU DO THE SAME THING DON'T DOG HER JUST PRAY FOR HER INSTEAD AS GOD FORGIVE US 7X7 SO WHY CAN'T MAN FORGIVE
: 2/10/2010
Every single one of you who has taken the high moral ground would have done exactly the same thing if you had been innher shoes, despite knowing its wrong.
Gran Ma. : 2/10/2010
Are grandmothers doing such things now adays? No!!! she is one in a million. I hope she has learnt her lesson. Teach the youth the right way and not the wrong way. Shame on you gran!!! Nevertheless, we all learn from our mistakes. Get yourself in a Church and as the father for forgiveness.
Grandmother Hiding Drugs : 2/9/2010
Sometimes I wonder what is Barbados coming to.This is one of the worst stories I have heard about since I left Barbados in the early eighties. Grandmothers are supposed to show their grandchildren the right way. Teach them to be honest, to respect themselves and the respect the law,
and in general to be good citizens.
If my grandmother was alive today she would not believe her ears.
I guess the good old days are really gone.
Magistrate Beckles should have put both granny and grandson away for at least a couple years. It would have been a good lesson to those who think they can encourage minors to break the law.
Bajan in Toronto
Granny! : 2/9/2010
As Bajans say a bad boy better than no boy at all. I am glad gran got arrested .Like the bank employees who kept carrying away the peoples money and were only warned or dismissed .Then the time came where there was too much stealing in the banks .They had to face the court .This granny would not be the last either .She should be made to pay forthwith .They encourage their children and grands in wuflessness . She would tell you now , wuh the boy in do nothing ,the boy in break in no body house . Parents and grand parents need to stop upholding these children in wuflessness . I am sure granny know's about bushes , you want to tell me granny had catarract and thought it was tomato or senna leaves in a bag . It is people like her who are the "look outs" in certain communities and you hear all the young shouting out for gran . They too get draw backs . Goes to show you cannot trust anyone nowadays .
She should have been Jailed : 2/8/2010
This is why we still have drug problem in Barbados. Because of people like this old woman.
: 2/8/2010
To all commentators. I am not saying she was right...but you all would have tried to hide the package too.
: 2/8/2010
Grannie used to enjoy the 'fruits of the labour' $$$$$$ hehe
One Sided : 2/8/2010
I wonder if that is eahat actually happened.
The poice story is teh only story being told.
: 2/6/2010
At 79, I would have made it short, sharp and sweet. one week for each 'S' in prison, a true deterrent to all the other grannies. On her return she would want to throw away even the drugs the pharmicist give her.
ALZIMA'S
Lock up : 2/6/2010
If I was the judge I would have locked
up all of them.
: 2/6/2010
Well, parents and guardians who uphold their children in wrong doing deserve to be punished. She should have brought him up in the right way.
The little 'ol lady from... : 2/6/2010

BEAN : 2/6/2010
I love the bean story. Reminds me of Jack and the Beanstalk. Hurray for that grandma, but shame on this one. They should put she ole a** in Glendairy (sorry, Dodds) for a week and let it knock some sense in she.
: 2/6/2010
I once had a relative whose grandson had a "bean" growing in the yard. She observed him a couple of mornings washing his face in the yard with a cup of water over this "bean". By the third morning the bean was no longer there. When he enquired, she told him, yes I pull it up and throw it way, I ent nuh idiot. That was the end of discussion.
2 Drug Dealers : 2/6/2010
I respect the elderly but this woman is involved with this drug trafficking with her grandson. Why would she try to hide it? that means to me that she knew full well what it was and what he was doing. I had a grandgmother that if she even suspected you were a drug dealer she would call the police for you herself. She would say "not in hey" Why do parents get involved in crime? We lead by example.
: 2/6/2010
