SUPERCENTRE SPARTAN dramatically qualified for the quarter-finals of the Sagicor Twenty20 Competition by narrowly beating Wanderers by three runs at Dayrells Road yesterday.
There was excitement on the field for the Parkites when the game ended with Wanderers only reaching 125 for nine from their 20 overs, replying to Spartan’s 137 for four, a total beefed up by Nicholas Carter’s 29-ball 46 which contained four fours and two sixes.
But the match officials – referee Colin Bowen and umpires Dalton Holder and Richard King – ruled that Spartan were delinquent by one over in the time they completed their allotted 20 overs.
Therefore nine runs were deducted from Spartan’s score, leaving them with a total of 128, three more than what Wanderers made.
Earlier, Wanderers received a solid foundation from openers Marvin Forde and Nick Evans, who put on 54 within six overs.
As Forde departed, the visitors tightened the screws on the home team with excellent bowling by veterans Hattian Graham and coach/player Dave Marshall. Renaldo Arthur and Diego Stuart tried valiantly in a fourth-wicket stand but their dismissals led to a Wanderers’ collapse.

AT BANK HALL: What started as a contest between two cricketing clubs materialised into a duel between Alcindo Holder and Ron Bates.
It was won handsomely by Holder as ICBL Empire beat LIME by 35 runs in an action-packed contest.
Replying to Empire’s 176 for five off 20 overs LIME reached 141 for nine off their allotted 20.
The margin of victory was comfortable in the end, but while Bates was at the crease for most of the Power Play overs, there may have been a few anxious moments in Empire’s camp.
Bates lashed six threes and six fours in scoring 46 off 20 balls, but after he was bowled by Jason Hinds in the sixth over, LIME declined to 69 for four.
They never recovered, despite a knock of 44 off 45 balls from captain Courtney Browne. Ryan Hinds took two for 13.
Bates’ knock was in response to an amazing display of power hitting from Alcindo Holder who scored 58 off 23 balls for Empire with six threes and eight fours. Kevin Stoute contributed a run-a-ball 37.

AT BAYFIELD: Half-centuries by opener Chad Proverbs and wicketkeeper Patrick Browne saw St Catherine romping to 121 for one in 18.4 overs to defeat Pickwick by nine wickets.
Browne struck four fours and one six in his unbeaten 57, while Proverbs hit three boundaries in 53 not out.
Pickwick, sent in on a placid pitch, were restricted to 121 for eight by controlled off-spin bowling from captain Kenroy Williams, who took three wickets for 11 runs in four tidy overs.
