KINGSTON – The St Andrew South police seized 13 motorcycles during a series of raids in Half-Way-Tree and surrounding communities last week.
Thursday’s seizure brought to 33, the number of bikes confiscated since the operation began on Wednesday.
Police said that the aim of the drive was to cripple the movement of criminal elements in and around the city.
“The aim of this is to stop the movement of criminals from Tivoli Gardens and other areas,” said Superintendent Derrick Knight, head of the St Andrew South police division.
“Cops have received information that men who fled Tivoli Gardens during a three-day stand-off between the police were now using bikes to travel across the Corporate Area,” one policeman told the Observer during the operation, which drew a large crowd of onlookers.
“As you can see, only a few men are in Tivoli at this time; the men from the area have fled,” Knight said.
Police also said that the operation to bring in the illegal bikes had been in progress since a curfew was imposed over sections of Kingston recently.
“This is something we will continue for as long as the curfew is in place,” Knight said. (Jamaica Observer)
