THE Barbados Swim team was scheduled to return home late last night from the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships in Cuba with the impressive haul of 52 medals. The 20 gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze doubles the number won in 2008 when Barbados had 26 medals in Jamaica.Eighteen medals were won on the last two days.On Day 4, Sariyah Sherry, Zabrina Holder, Christian Selby and Lee-Ann Rose won gold medals; with Inayah Sherry, Deandre Small and Kimberley Willoughby taking silver and Amara Gibbs two bronze medals.Rose set a new national open and age group record of 2 minutes 10.35 seconds in the 200 metres freestyle. Inayah and Holder set new age group records in the 11 to 12 and 13 to 14 Girls’ 200m freestyle respectively, while Selby had a new CISC record in the 11 to 12 Boys’ 400 free.On the fifth day, team Barbados wrapped up with six gold, one silver and two bronze medals.Holder won two of those medals in the 100 free and 200m individual medley and Gibbs set a new age group record of 1:09.52 to go along with her gold in the 100m backstroke.Rose also won gold in the 200 back; Raymond Edwards in the 200 breaststroke and Inayah in the 50 free. Deandre Small won silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 200IM, and the 11 to 12 Girls’ 4×100 metres freestyle relay team also captured bronze. (SAT)
