Casting back to the past
The Payne’s Bay Fish Market was engulfed in a fiesta yesterday.President of the Payne’s Bay Fisherfolk Association, Eulene Young-Haynes, said it was the culmination of their celebration of Fisherman’s Week, dubbed Fishermen’s Fiesta.“We had a discussion and there was a suggestion to show how fishing used to be in the past, and this was how the fiesta came about. We wanted to conceptualise the comparison between the old and new methods of fishing,” she said.In addition to pictures showing the bygone days of fishing, there were also pictures showing more modern methods, all as part of a “museum” that also included displays of shells, coral, nets, lures and floats.Young-Haynes said the event also featured karaoke; a live DJ; beach games; free food; swimming competitions and domino tournaments, as well as blood checks, and HIV and mental health lectures. The St James Parish Ambassadors were scheduled to lend support.
