THE Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) is disappointed with the responses of some Barbadians who have turned away census enumerators now in the process of collecting data for the 2010 Population and Housing Census.Director of the BSS, Angela Hunte, said that some Barbadians refused to allow the enumerators to enter their homes to conduct the interviews while others were evasive in their responses. She reiterated that the information collected would be held in the strictest confidence as stipulated by the Statistics Act Cap 192.Hunte said: “The department is concerned by these reports and we are urging the public to cooperate since an accurate count of the population is necessary to inform Government’s economic planning.”The director underscored the importance of the process and described it as “the largest and most complex exercise carried out by a national statistical office”.She remarked: “The census provides information on what our country needs to know in order to develop policies and programmes for the common good of Barbadians. The census involves us all so we are counting on each person who resides in Barbados, to do his or her part, in making the 2010 Population and Housing Census a success.” The exercise, which began on Sunday, May 2, and was slated to run over a six-week period, has been extended until Sunday, July 11, due to the inclemency of the weather.
