Talented secondary and tertiary students across the island will be given the opportunity to showcase their creative skills in the Barbados National Oil Company Ltd (BNOCL) 2011 calendar. BNOCL has launched its sustainable energy-related poster competition under the theme Save Energy, Save Money. It is open to youth aged 11 to 19, and will run to October 22. The competition is part of BNOCL’s bid to rebrand as an energy company instead of an oil company and will help to increase awareness and promote a greater appreciation for energy conservation and sustainable energy among that age group.
Sustainable energyBNOCL acting general manager Winton Gibbs said: “We are pleased to engage persons of this age group as we move towards increasing levels of sustainable energy use in Barbados. “We recognise the need for shaping positive conservative attitudes towards energy, and the youth will be our forerunners in this movement.” Entrants are required to submit a poster for their respective category; 11-15 or 16-19, depicting their ideas on sustainable energy, along with a 200-word description of their work. Submissions may be made under the sub-themes: Efficient Use Of Energy, Sustainable Energy Use, Renewable Energy and Energy Innovation. The 12 winners (six from each category) could win up to $1 000 worth of art supplies and equipment for their school and individual prizes such as an Apple iPad, iPod Touch, as well as books and DVDs on sustainable energy. Winning submissions will also be featured in BNOCL’s 2011 calendar.
