Taxi operator Harcourt Walkes does not only have deep pockets but a big heart as well.Walkes won almost $3 million in the Mega 6 lottery last month and has set about to help the people whom he transports on a daily basis. He works at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and said he frequently comes across dialysis patients and has a “good rapport” with them. For this reason, Walkes decided to contact the QEH’s Artificial Kidney Unit and enquire how he could help. This resulted in his donation of an extra US$19 000 haemodialysis machine to the QEH yesterday which supplemented its latest set of machines supplied through a contract with dialysis product providers, Renal Dynamics.Walkes said he would consider making another similar donation to the QEH, provided he struck gold at the lottery again. Here, a smiling Walkes (right) along with (from left) staff nurse in the haemodialysis unit, Mario Hall, medical equipment technician Dexter Griffith, director of engineering services Paula Yarde, and consultant nephrologist Dr Emile Mohammed.
