NEWLY CROWNED Caribbean women’s squash champion Karen Meakins is off to a winning start at the tenth World Squash Federation’s World Masters Championships in Cologne, Germany.
Meakins, a ten-time national champion who is seeded No. 5 in the over-35 age group, dismissed her unseeded first-round opponent Ayten Kececi from Turkey 11-2, 11-2, 11-0 in the round of 32.
Meakins will now face another unseeded opponent from Slovakia in the round of 16 today.
If, as expected, she clears that hurdle then her next challenge should be in the quarter-finals where she will be up against Peta Jan Murphy, the No. 3 seed from Australia.
“. . . never seen so many squash players in one place. There are 15 courts at the main venue with matches all day long,” Meakins said.
“I am totally inspired by when I watch the players in the over 70 and over 75 age groupings who are still active and very competitive.”
There are more than 800 competitors in the biennial World Masters Championships with competition for both men and ladies in the over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and over 75 age groups.
There are 29 entries in the women’s over-35 age group. (PR/HG)
