Deacons take out YMCA
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS BNB Deacons showed they are not ready to give up their Men’s Premier Hockey League crown just yet as they dealt Berger YMCA their first loss of the season in a 5-4 thriller on Saturday night at the Hockey Centre to throw the title race wide open.
National midfielder Neil Franklin’s hat-trick of penalty corner conversions enabled Deacons to fight back from an early hole and grab a crucial three points.
YMCA, who entered the weekend at the top of the table, jumped out to a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes through two early goals from stalwart Colton Slocombe and one from Ramario Howell.
But Deacons got into the contest emphatically before half-time as Keiron Taylor, Franklin and Jabari Walcott struck to level at 3-3 at the interval.
Franklin completed Deacons’ sensational turnaround with two goals within ten minutes of the restart.
Dario Lewis cut the deficit with a strike in the 48th minute but YMCA could not find another way through.
All Stars replaced YMCA at the top of the table following a 4-2 win over Wanderers on Sunday night.
Marlon Daniel opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and Barry Clarke netted twice in two minutes to make it 3-0 to the Stars after 16 minutes – a strong position they never relinquished.
Combermere School Old Scholars (CSOS) also put themselves among the chasing pack with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Eastern Stars.
Stars led through a 10th minute strike from Akeem Rudder but CSOS equalised before the half through captain Chetwyn Henry.
CSOS totally dominated the second period but they left it late to seal a winner through Henry’s second – a low drag flick from a penalty corner.
In the Women’s Premier League, it was business as usual as top two Empire and CSOS registered wins – albeit in contrasting fashion.
Defending queens CSOS were indebted to a 63rd minute penalty corner strike from Maria Sealy to see off plucky University of the West Indies (UWI) 1-0.
Empire romped home 8-0 against Deacons with Sheena Nicholls leading the way with a second half hat-trick.
