ROSEAU, Dominica – Police arrested a young woman yesterday in connection with the early morning deaths of her two children, aged five and one.
“We learnt of a suspected double homicide in Mahaut where a mother apparently killed her two children, but that matter is still under investigation,” said Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Cyril Carette.
Carette said the circumstances surrounding the murders were unclear, but the children’s mother, whose name has not yet been released, was taken into custody and is assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile, police also confirmed the shooting death of a 32-year-old man.
The lawmen said Omara Smalls, formerly Mwanga Freeman, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen late Wednesday night.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
In 1998 Smalls was sentenced to death on a charge of manslaughter in the death of Ossie Charles of Roseau but was released five years later after the Privy Council found that aspects of the court matter fell short of the “standard requirements”. (CMC)
