RACE FANS can expect a very intense day of racing today as the second racing season draws to a close.
It might be the sport of kings, but come race time queens will share the spotlight, as the fillies’ edition of the Barbados Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Sale Graduates Trophy Race will run off as one of two features; the other being the colts’ race.
The thoroughbreds are bound to provide thrills, and with the young apprentices also showcasing their talents to the maximum, the energy levels at the Garrison Savannah should be a boost for all.
The second half of the day’s feature race, the Barbados Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Sale Graduates Fillies Trophy over 1 100 metres, seems a very straight forward affair, except for the fact that in horse racing, very seldom is anything quite that simple.
Hot favourite Fernandina has reeled off a hat-trick of second places, but seeks to go one better and hand in her maiden certificate. Few would be bold enough to bet against her achieving the victory.
The Fiona Kinch-owned filly has not had the luck of the draw, pulling outside stall positions for all her previous starts, however, on even weights, and with the extended trip, everything seems right for her.
Dane Hill Racing’s Lune De Barachois was impressive in her first outing, and has claims here, although there is a belief she needs a longer trip to be at her best.
The Christopher Gibbs-owned Indian Soul has been steady, and should give another decent performance.
Joycies Boys’ filly Nile Queen was a good fourth in the Buckingham Palace Conditions race going 1 000 metres. She is open to improve, and could be good enough to find a place. Of note is the riding assignment, with Anderson Trotman retaining the ride.
Of the others to have had a start, Lady Quill, trained by Andrew Nunes, ran green in her first outing, finishing fifth, but could improve to take one of the places. Par-Tic-u-Lar’s first experience of facing the starter was not particularly encouraging, but often a first run does these juveniles some good, and better is expected as she comes to grips with this game.
The performances of Vicki’s Choice and Jamaica Gem have not won them many fans, and they can be considered rank outsiders.
A look at the first-timers shows trainer Andrew Nunes saddling Kendal Moon (by Moon Solitaire-Zelina) and her pedigree suggest she is worthy of being followed.
Owner/trainer John D. Chandler saddles Sweet Bottom Suzie (Pen In Hand-Noble Approval). Chandler usually does well with first time two-year-olds, and the filly is expected to create a stir.
If all turns out well, owner Carol Clark could have acquired a treasure chest in Never Turn Right (a full sister to this year’s Triple Crown runner-up Amanyara). Experienced rider Ricky Walcott will be in the saddle.
