Subrina Munroe is the new kid on the block in the West Indies Women’s team preparing to tour South Africa next month. After eight years of trying, the strongly-built pacer from New Amsterdam in Guyana, has finally earned a place on the West Indies team.
On Saturday she and her team-mates will depart from Barbados for the ICC’s Women’s Challenge tournament in Potchefstroom. The girls are presently in camp in Barbados under the guidance of coach Sherwin Campbell as they prepare for the major international assignment.
For Munroe, 25, wearing the Windies colours is a dream come true.
In a recent interview, she was clearly excited to be making the trip. “It’s all new to me but I’m trying to soak up as must as possible in the time we have here at the camp before we go to South Africa. I’m just trying my best to learn whatever I can and use it as experience when I go on tour,” Munroe said. “Having never played at the highest level before I have no idea what to expect, so my major aim at this stage is to listen to the coach and my team-mates and take advice from them.”
Munroe is one of the fittest members of the team and that is a result of the sporting road she has travelled to reach this point. As a teenager, she represented Guyana in volleyball and also at the CARIFTA Games, where she competed in shot putt and discus. She is also the fastest bowler in the team and will share the new ball with Shakera Selman. This is a challenge Munroe is ready to accept.
“When I first heard I was selected I said ‘the hard work has paid off’. Everything takes work and you don’t get to the top overnight … this is a stepping stone for me and the tour to South Africa is another step up the ladder. It is a privilege and an honour to represent the West Indies and this is like a dream to wear West Indies colours. The dream continues in South Africa and you can be sure I will give it my all,” she said.
“When I was younger I played [cricket] in the park for fun but I was not really into cricket. I was more into track and volleyball. I started to take cricket seriously after I decided to switch from the other sporting pursuits. When I started to pay cricket everything just clicked. Fast bowling is what I love the most and here I am loving every moment of it.”
