ONE DAY into senior games action and Barbados are already guaranteed the top two podium finishes – in the same sport.
And a third is quite possible.
Defending Huntsman World Senior Games champ Carlton Sealy and Christopher Banfield have set up an all-Bajan table tennis final after Monday’s opening day in St George, Utah.
Competing in the men’s 50-54 singles, Sealy overcame a huge scare before coming from two games down to beat the fifth-seeded Zedplin Law 6-11, 8-11, 11-1, 11-3, 11-6 in his semi-final showdown.
Banfield had an easier time of it against fellow Bajan Wilmont Goddard, winning three games to one to advance to tomorrow’s title match. Goddard is set to play Law for the bronze.
In track and field, lightning and heavy rainfall forced an early conclusion to most of the field events, but not before Barbados gained two bronze medals.
Defending long jump champ and record holder Shirley Harper had to settle for third in the women 60-64 category, while the United States-based John Brooks finished third best in the men’s 50-54 horizontal jump. (JM/PR
