DEAR CHRISTINE: Boss won’t pay workers absent because of storm

Dear Christine,
I have a daughter who works at a service station. She was scheduled to work on Saturday, October 30, but because of Tropical Storm Tomas, she was unable to go.
The boss threatened not to pay her and others who were rostered to work that day. He said he wouldn’t be paying anyone who didn’t show up for work.

Dear Concerned Parent,
The custom in Barbados by many employers is to pay workers for the day though they did not turn up for work because an act of Mother Nature genuinely kept them away. Whether this custom is mandatory is another matter.
Your daughter and her colleagues would have to check with the Labour Department  on the matter.
– Christine
