Most wanted criminal caught
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Police said today they have detained one of the country’s wanted criminals who has been linked to the fire that destroyed the Ministry of Health building last year.
Police said that Colin Jones also known as ‘Bonny’ was arrested during the early hours this morning, and taken to a local hospital to treat gunshot wounds sustained during an exchange with law enforcement officials last Thursday.
Police said they found an AK-47 assault rifle, several rounds of ammunition, one bullet-proof vest and other material on a farm where Jones and at least four other persons were hiding.
No firearm was found in Jones’ possession and police are searching for a hand-gun that they said he used on Thursday.
Jones and Kurt Thierens escaped on July 27, 2009 from the Providence Police Station.
Police say that Jones was a member of a heavily-armed gang that in November 2009 carried out a series of attacks that left one person dead and two policemen nursing gunshot wounds.
The gang was also blamed for attacking the Brickdam Police Station, attempting to burn down the Georgetown Supreme Court and the Richard Ishmael Secondary School. (CMC)
