Government is getting millions of dollars to boost human resource development in the island.
Up to $130 million dollars (approximately 50 million euros) in funding could be made available through the European Union over a four year period. Approximately $60 million ( 23 million euros) is being made available in the first tranche and if the targets are met then an additional 27 million euros will be granted.
Cabinet is soon expected to discuss details of the project which will be executed by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and the Public Investment Unit.
News of the programme was outlined Wednesday by Bob Baldwin, First Counsellor and Head of the social development section at the EU’s local office. Baldwin said the overall objective of the proposed Barbados Human Resource Development Programme is to increase competitiveness to allow sustainable growth and poverty alleviation. This would involve building human capacity, improving employability of Barbadians in order to reduce vulnerability among youth and to improve overall productivity. (ES)
