MIDDLE-ORDER batsman Roston Chase put his name in the ring for selection on the Barbados team with an unbeaten 119 on the third day of the first national cricket trial at St Catherine’s Sports and Social Club, Bayfield, St Philip, yesterday.
Chase, who will celebrate his 19th birthday in March, batted the entire day, striking 14 fours in 316 minutes off 264 balls in a mature, responsible innings after resuming from just 12 overnight.
At the close, Shamarh Brooks’ Team, resuming on 143 for two, had reached 361 for six, replying to 389 made by Jason Holder’s Team.
It was another day of toil for the bowlers on an easy-paced pitch, with just four wickets falling after only three fell on Sunday’s second day.
Chase, a tall, elegant right-hander with a bias towards the off-side, played a number of attractive drives through the covers and square of the wicket as he moved to 46 at lunch and was on 91 at tea after surviving a caught and bowled chance to left-arm spinner Chad Clarke-Reifer.
He also had to endure a 45-minute wait on 99 when rain stopped play. But when play resumed, Chase reached the magic figure by ondriving left-arm swing bowler Pedro Collins for two.
His century came off 232 balls in 264 minutes and contained 13 fours.
It was the second century of the trial match by a recent Combermere graduate following wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich’s 166 in Holder’s Team’s innings.
