Parris earning plaudits in US
BARBADIAN Cheri-Ann Parris was named the women’s Harrow Sports College Squash Player Of The Week for the period ending January 17 for her performances with Bates College in Massachusetts, United States.
The award is given to the player who has made a significant impact on her team’s performance and demonstrates sportsmanship.
Parris, 21, a former Caribbean junior champion, had a very successful Pioneer Valley Invitational. Although the Bobcats, as her college team is called, had a 2-1 record, she played unbeaten.
She posted wins over Randima Ranweera of Mount Holyoke, Morgan Smith (F&M) and Hayley Milbourn of Amherst.
Last Saturday, when Bates College had an away match versus Dartmouth, Parris won the second game against Valeria Wiens, the fifth-ranked player in the country.
Last year, Parris, a Lodge School alumnus, created Bates College history when she was named Rookie Of The Year and also received first team All-Conference honours from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
It was the first time a women’s squash player at Bates had won both awards in the two-year existence of the All-NESCAC awards. (EZS)
