MINISTER OF LABOUR Esther Byer-Suckoo yesterday urged the students at Ellerton Primary School to conquer the world “one book at a time”.
As she delivered remarks at the official opening ceremony of the school’s library, she told the students that reading kept the mind fit and disclosed she was the proud owner of approximately 1 000 books. “Everything I have learnt, I have learnt from a book,” she said.
The Member of Parliament for St George South let the students know that she did not want to hear that “any of you left [graduated] Ellerton Primary and have not gone into the library and borrowed a book”.
“As we get older, yes we want our bodies to be able to do certain things but it doesn’t help much if the mind isn’t there. So we need to exercise our minds, we need to continue to read.”
After the ceremony, Byer-Suckoo took time out to sit in the library and read to some of the students.
