Students’ safety on roads key

The Barbados Road Safety Association Safety Association has launched a School Traffic Safety Awareness Programme along with a Road Safety Mascot Saf-F-Y The Safe Chicken, which will teach children and adults safe procedures on how to use Barbados’ roads as pedestrians.
During the launching ceremony today at the Arthur Smith Primary School, the association’s president Sharmane Bowen explained that the programme was broken into two phases with various components to ensure a holistic learning process and guarantee its success.
“In phase one we will be conducting road safety presentations in public and private primary schools. There will also be the road safety competition, quizzes, and the introduction of our Road Safety Ambassadors at primary schools. Phase two will see the extension of the National Road Safety Debate Competition in the secondary schools along with theintroduction of a Drivers Education Program called S.E.R.D for fourth and fifth form students and persons preparing for their drivers’ licenses,” she said.
