PEP COLUMN: Hands off Libya!

In 1986, the United States launched a terrorist attack on Libya designed to murder Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Warplanes bombed Gaddafi’s residence in Tripoli, murdering his daughter and about 100 innocent Libyans.
In 1996, British intelligence utilized the services of an al Qaeda cell in Libya in a bid to assassinate Colonel Gaddafi. The result was that a bomb intended for Gaddafi was detonated under the wrong car in Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte, killing several civilians.
Now, in the year 2011, we have this collective attempt on the part of a cabal of Western (read “white”) nations to assassinate Colonel Gaddafi and effect “regime change” in Libya.
The following is an edited version of a public statement issued by our party, the People’s Empowerment Party: “Just over one week ago – on March 10, 2011 – the Heads of State who are members of the Peace and Security Council of the 53-nation African Union (AU) met and took a number of important decisions in relation to the situation in the African country of Libya, a founding member-state of the AU.
“First and foremost, the Peace and Security Council decided to establish an AU High Level Committee on Libya comprising five African heads of state or government and the chairperson of the AU Commission, to commence immediate work on finding a peaceful solution to the civil conflict that had emerged in Libya.
“The High Level Committee was specifically mandated to ‘engage with all parties in Libya’; to ‘facilitate an inclusive dialogue among the Libyan parties on appropriate reforms’; and ‘to engage AU’s partners, in particular the League of Arab States, the European Union and the United Nations to facilitate coordination of efforts and seek their support for the early resolution of the crisis’.
“The Peace and Security Council also explicitly affirmed its ‘strong commitment to the respect of the unity and territorial integrity of Libya, as well as its rejection of any foreign military intervention, whatever its form’.
“Furthermore, the chairperson of the AU Commission was instructed by the Peace and Security Council to immediately transmit these decisions to the United Nations Security Council, the League of Arab States, the European Union and other concerned AU partners.
“The African Union had therefore made it absolutely clear to such nations as Italy, Britain, France, the United States and Canada that the nations of the African continent were undertaking a collective responsibility for dealing with the situation in their own African nation of Libya and steering it to a peaceful and constructive resolution.
“In spite of this, these Western nations completely ignored the African Union initiative, and in the most callous, racist and barbaric manner have unleashed a murderous, high technology military assault on the nation and people of Libya.
“Clearly, these white nations have no respect or regard for the nations and people of Africa! It is also equally clear that they are pursing their own wicked and selfish agenda to destroy the strong nationalist Libyan government, and to take control of Libya and its extensive petroleum resources!”
