The St Michael youth David Lynch, who was shot by police on Wednesday had attacked one of the officers with a cutlass to prevent his apprehension.
Police public relations officer Inspector David Welch also dismissed family claims that police never informed them about the 16-year-old’s whereabouts following the incident.
Welch said after Lynch was treated and discharged for the gunshot injury to his upper left thigh, he was taken to District “A:” Police Station, where he was detained for questioning in connection with a number of serious criminal matters.
The police public relations officer said the young man’s father was subsequently informed and was handed a doctor’s prescription for his son’s injury.“Other family members were also notified,” Welch said.
Lynch escaped from the Government Industrial School at Dodds a year ago while serving a three-year sentence for a theft offence.His mother, Ruth Butcher said her son was innocent of any crime and accused the police of withholdinformation about her son’s whereabouts while in custody.
