From T-shirts to mini-skirts

How would you define your personal style?
My personal style is simple yet elegant with a touch of class. I try to be conventional.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends or do you play by your own rules?
My rule is what makes me comfortable because there are some trends that may not fit well with my body type. Just because it’s in style doesn’t mean I’ll wear it.

Has your fashion sense changed over the years or has it remained the same?
Oh,  yes definitely changed! I went from coloured jeans and my uncle’s T-shirts to skirts and dresses in my mid-teens when my best friend re-introducted me to them.

Are there any colours that you tend to shy away from, and if so why?
I try to avoid wearing black during the day because I work outdoors.

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
I grew into my own fashion sense or lack thereof.  My mother loves ‘dressing up’ and she did the same with me. I remember wearing pretty floral dresses and matching outfits with hair ribbons, bobbles and socks but as I got older I chose the tomboy look.

How does your day-to-day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
It doesn’t. I have clothes in my wardrobe that I’ve never worn.  As a physical education teacher I wear sports attire during the week and I exercise regularly so when I go out, there is this transformation from shorts to semiformal or casual wear.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
I like Sonia Noel (Guyana), Shachad Designs, Lucy Lu, Nike, Ralph Lauren. As long as it looks good on me and I can affford it.

If you could choose one colour that should be in every wardrobe, what would it be and why?
White because it is simply appealing and represents purity.

Where do you like to shop?
Locally, anywhere that does not sell too much of one piece. When I travel it’s sports stores, Forever 21, New York & Co, Express, Old Navy or Macy’s where I look for one-of-a kind outfits.
