Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic and Wilmont “Funk” Goddard dominated the exchanges in Group 2, while Courtney Springer and Wayne Branch were the form players in Group 1 as the National Senior Games Table Tennis Tournament resumed at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, on Monday.
The players took a break last week because of a Level 1 coaching course being held by the Barbados Table Tennis Association.
Bostic, Goddard, Springer and Branch all played unbeaten and positioned themselves for quarter-final places.
Bostic hardly raised a sweat in winning three of his four matches and didn’t even have to lift his racket to win a fourth.
The former army man marched past Mark Ellis 11-4, 11-9; Philip Hackett 11-8, 11-7, and Rawle Husbands 13-11, 14-12. Bostic’s fourth win came when Marguerita Felix defaulted.
Goddard downed Ellis 11-4, 11-7 and Felix 11-4, 11-6. However, it was a different story when he came up against the highly-touted Chris Banfield.
Goddard dropped the first game at nine but stormed back to beat Banfield 11-8, 11-7.
In Group 1, Springer, one of the pre-tournament favourites, cruised past David Harris 11-4, 11-3 and Philip Tull 11-3, 11-6.  He was forced to work harder for an 11-6, 7-11, 11-5 victory over title contender Charles Lovell.
Branch beat Trevor Browne 11-5, 11-5 and Edwin Jordan 11-4, 11-2.  His greatest challenge came from Harris but Branch prevailed 11-6, 6-11, 11-8. (PH)
