The way you dress affects how others view you. It’s nothing personal, just business. Many professional women are guilty of multiple fashion faus pas. So is being overly conservative the key to advancing? Not necessarily. Although it can’t hurt to err on the side of caution, asserting a little bit of individuality and personal style can boost your confidence and ability. As elsewhere in your business, it pays to stay one step ahead of the expected.
For these three women, being on the Nation Publishing Company’s advertising team means more often than not they are on the road than in the office. For them, being in sales or advertising means meeting clients and conducting meetings every day.
Here, they show what they wear to work on any given day. (NSH)

What was the idea behind the outfit?
Today’s schedule dictated that I needed a suit. The suit is biscuit shade and the style of the inside maroon chemise allowed for a creative twist to traditional work wear. The pop of colour made the outfit fun and not stuffy. The snakeskin peep toe shoes gave the outfit the right amount of edge with the graduating shades of maroon.
My jewellery are all classic but trendy pieces. A necklace would have competed with the style of the chemise. I therefore opted for a classic gold and sterling silver medium-sized hoops with matching bracelet. A white gold, rope-textured ring and a brushed silver dotted with rose-coloured gold wristwatch complemented the outfit.

How long have you had these pieces?
The suit about two years, the inside top about nine months, and shoes about year and a half.

Which do you have on that is your favourite?
The top. I love the sophisticated colour, the romantic ruffles and  the easy, breathable fabric that is also crease-resistant!

Do you pick fashion over comfort?
Definitely comfort but clothes must still be contemporary.

How high are those heels?

What was the idea behind the outfit?
An outfit that could be pulled together quickly (was running late for work) and still look fashionable

How long have you had these pieces?
Had the dress for over seven years, cardigan and belt two years, shoes less than a year

Which do you have on that is your favourite?
The shoes

Do you pick fashion over comfort?
More often I go for comfort

What was the idea behind the outfit?
This outfit was supposed to be my pop of colour for summer. I usually wear more conservative colours but I just couldn’t help myself with the pink. It’s so much fun… I think it may be summer all year long.

What about the bag?
The bag is by Coach. I work in advertising so I usually have to walk with lots of stuff when I go to see clients. Past publications, proofs, press kits . . .it all has to fit without making me look like I’m going camping.

How long have you had these pieces?
They were purchased at different times during this year.

Which is your favourite piece?
The pants! Can’t wait to rock my purple ones with a crisp white shirt.

Do you pick fashion over comfort?
Usually I go for comfort and quality, however I do own a few pairs of shoes that are…. Well, let’s just say they are cute.

How high are those heels?
A mere 3 ½ inches.
