Layoffs a problem
Private sector bosses are resorting to layoffs despite promises to keep workers employed during the current economic crisis.
And Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) general secretary Sir Roy Trotman says “it is a very serious problem, and not an isolated case here or there”.
In an interview with the Sunday Sun, Sir Roy expressed concern that some employers had over the last nine months been sending letters to the BWU advising of the layoffs after the fact, with the union not being given the opportunity to seek “alternative measures or employment rationalization”, which were actions recommended within the Social Partnership.
While not giving numbers for the layoffs, he said the action was “unfortunate because what we need to do in Barbados is to go for a situation where as many persons as possible will have jobs even if they are not all able to work full 40 hours”. (GC)
