Residents in some communities are adopting tighter, more sophisticated security measures in the face of rising crime.
Increasing numbers are not only putting in intruder systems, but many have installed closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras which can be monitored 24/7 from their computers in the office, on the road, or even overseas.
Security companies are reporting that in recent months, there has been a jump in not only calls and inquiries about security systems, but also installations.
Police statistics show that between 2007 and 2011 burglaries have increased. From January to June this year alone, there were 658 burglary cases. Cases of aggravated burglary (where another felony has been committed) have dropped, however. In the first six months, there were 50, compared to 63 in 2008; 42 in 2009, and 32 last year. (CM)
