No new constituency seat
THERE WILL NOT BE AN increase in the number of seats in the House of Assembly before the next general election in Barbados constitutionally due in the first half of 2013.
The bipartisan Electoral & Boundaries Commission (EBC), which is chaired by the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP), has reviewed the number and boundaries of the existing 30 constituencies, and on September 7, 2011, submitted a report to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who is responsible for elections, stating that in its opinion no alteration was required to either the number of seats or their boundaries.
Stuart is expected to move the passage of a resolution to approve the draft Electoral & Boundaries (Review Of Boundaries) Order, 2011, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. when the House meets in a pre-Independence Day sitting.
That order will come into force on the next dissolution of Parliament. (AB)
