CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC – The Barbados-based regional low cost carrier, REDjet, will begin servicing the St. Lucia route from Friday December 16, the airline has announced.
Communication Manager Nyssa Pierre told a news conference that the carrier, which is already flying to Guyana, Jamaica, Antigua and Trinidad and Tobago, will begin two weekly flights to the island increasing to three by the middle of next year.
“Two days ago we launched flights over December to January and some are almost fully booked, which goes to show that St. Lucia and Barbados have been crying out for this service, a low cost non-stop service.
“We don’t have millions of years of experience but what we do have in a promise to be honest with our customers,” Pierre said, adding that the airline’s objective was to make air travel available to everyone and not just the wealthy.
Pierre said that the airlines mandate was bringing competition and choice to consumers adding “we are not here to kick anyone out of the sky.
“We really just want you to have the option, if you want to fly Caribbean Airlines, LIAT and now REDjet, the point is you have a choice,” she said adding that the fare could be reduced as much as 60 per cent on the Barbados-St. Lucia route.
“This means for the Caribbean a boost in tourism, a boost in jobs as we expand and develop,” she said, apologising for the absence of the airlines co-founder and business development director, Robbie Burns, who remained stranded in Barbados as a result of the industrial action by pilots working with LIAT.
“I think this does highlight the obvious need for additional service in and out of St. Lucia,” she said.
