Half-centuries by Raymon Reifer, Omar Phillips and Rashidi Boucher provided the highlights of the day as the first trial match ended in a predictable draw yesterday at Foursquare Oval in St Philip.
Williams’ XI batted all day to be 282 for 8 in their second innings after scoring 191 in their first, to which Brathwaite’s XI replied with 122.
Reifer’s powers of concentration would have impressed the selectors as his unbeaten 85 spanned more than four hours from 190 balls with only one six.
Phillips and Boucher’s 100-run stand for the first wicket was also impressive. Left-handed Phillips batted solidly to score 71 from 156 deliveries, laced with three fours and two sixes.
Boucher compiled an even half-century but lost concentration just after reaching his landmark to be bowled by Nikolai Charles, who was Brathwaite’s XI best bowler, snaring three for 78 from 31 overs.
With knocks of 21 and 71, Phillips would have gone into the selectors’ notebook as one of the candidates for the vacant opening spot.
Boucher’s half-century in the second innings would have kept him ahead of Jason Haynes (3) and Martin Nurse (32), who are also contenders to open for Barbados.
Wicketkeeper Renaldo Arthur gave a good account of himself keeping tidily in both innings and with scores of 43 and 24. Surrey pacer Christopher Jordan (38 and 18) batted intelligently in both innings and showcased his prowess in the slips with two fine catches.
Other performances over the three days would have given the selectors much to mull over.
Left-armer Derick Bishop, on his return to trials, took five wickets in the match, while teenaged off-spinner Chaim Holder showed that he has a bright future. Jomel Warrican’s (4-25) control of line and length in trying conditions was also noteworthy.
