A?new?Technical Director of football and a 100 per cent increase in prize money.
That’s what will greet local players when the 2012 Barbados Football Association’s (BFA)?Premier League season kicks off next month.
This follows an executive council meeting at Golden Sands Hotel last Sunday, chaired by BFA’s president Ronald Jones.
Investigations by WEEKEND?SPORT revealed that the English-born Julian Broomes has been appointed as the new technical director but will have to undergo a six-month probationary period.
He is currently in Canada attending a one-week conference, reviewing the last FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Prior to his appointment, the little-known Broomes had been assisting with the coaching of the national women’s teams while he also served as coach of the Bagatelle Premier League team.
At the meeting, it was also decided to double the first prize of the Digicel-sponsored Premier League from $20 000 to $40 000. The runner-up will now receive $20 000, also a 100 per cent increase from $10 000 while the team finishing third will earn $15 000, up by 200 per cent from $5 000 last year.
There will be no prize money for fourth place while the usual $1 000 participation grant has been discontinued.
The BFA?were scheduled to meet with representatives of the Premier League clubs last night to bring them update with the changes and discuss the rules and playing conditions for the new season, slated to start on February 26.
The Division 1 competition, which is without a sponsor is scheduled to begin on February 16, followed by the Division 2 tournament, two days later and the Division 3 championship on February 28.
