BARBADOS FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION (BFA)?president Ronald Jones has pulled a yellow card on the two recent out-of-season tournaments which offered big cash prizes totalling nearly $250 000.
In the wake of the LIME/Pelican Challenge and the David Thompson Memorial Inter-Parish tournaments, Jones, who is also Minister of Education, stressed that while players should be rewarded for their efforts, there was need for greater focus on quality.
“In this sport there must be improvement in quality. I didn’t see much; I saw an improvement in prize money and persons displaying the hunger for the money!
“One must see an improvement in the quality of the sport rather than running behind dollars and making sport. That must change. I appreciate the value and worth of money, but there must be some quality in the input to get the output. And when people go and pay to watch you play, they must see quality.”
