Hutchinson bows out of Pine Hill
Gavin Hutchinson was the highest-ranked player to crash out when the annual Pine Hill Dairy Tennis Championships continued at the Ocean View Tennis Club last Wednesday.
Whereas the majority of the seeded junior players reached the next round of competition, Hutchinson, the No. 4 seed, did not fare so well and was ousted in the first round by unseeded Aquille Trotman 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Trotman will now take on in-form No. 6 seed Jared Spencer in the quarter-final. Spencer also reached the second round of the men’s open competition with blistering straight sets 6-3, 6-3 victory over Liam Luke.
Simon Lewis, the No. 2 seed in the Boys’ Under-16 division, reached the quarter-finals with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Yannick Polanen.
In other men’s matches, Ryan Moseley, No. 8 seed, reached the quarter-finals with a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ajani King, while veteran and No. 5 seed Bernard Frost eased into his quarter-final round with an easy win over Simon Lewis 6-2, 6-2.
In the women’s division, No. 1 seed Melena Lopez reached the second round without losing a game over Sharon Lashley with a 6-0, 6-0 demolition, while Donna Gibbs defeated her doubles partner Sue Rogers 6-4, 6-4 in her first round.
Rosie Roach also reached the quarter-finals with a win over Elaine Isherwood 6-4, 6-3, while Jaime Lewis, in her first outing in the open event, defeated Melissa McCollin 6-3, 6-2.
