NEW YORK – St. Kitts and Nevis Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Delano Bart has described as “provocative and uncivilized” the police treatment of his St. Vincent and the Grenadines counterpart Camillo Gonsalves who was detained and handcuffed on Wednesday.
Bart, who is chairman of the United Nations CARICOM Group, described the move by the New York police as a “very serious and flagrant violation of obligations under the United Nations Headquarters Agreement and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations”.
Gonsalves has “vehemently” denied a claim by the New York Police Department (NYPD) that he was arrested earlier this week after he refused to identify himself.
“The officer asked the ambassador to stop, he refused, he continued and entered into the location, and the officers followed him into the location,” the NYPD on Thursday in statement.
But Gonsalves, the eldest son of Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that was simply not the case. (CMC)
